JOB DESCRIPTION

Providence Public Schools District (PPSD) seeks an exceptional SCHOOL NURSE who is highly qualified and skillful to join our community of teachers, students and stakeholders. This is an exciting opportunity for teachers who seek a challenging yet rewarding experience.

We serve approximately 22,000 students at 37 elementary, middle, and high schools. Approximately 55% of students come from homes where English is not the primary language spoken. REPORTS TO: Principal

Under direction of the school principal and/or appropriate supervisor, teaches and instructs students in academic subject matter, social, emotional, behavioral, and educational skill areas.

Additionally, the School Nurse will:
  • be academic advocates for their students advising, mentoring and modeling appropriate habits of mind and deed
  • use best practices in teaching
  • create a personalized, rigorous, socially engaging school environment that will meet the needs of all students
  • embrace partnerships with community organizations and parents to share in the efforts to meet and exceed national and local standards
  • participate in all district and school-based professional development
  • engage in all district-driven curricular and other initiatives as defined by the Providence School Department
  • follow all relevant School Board Policy

EDUCATION TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

Bachelor's degree in school nursing from an accredited college or university.

Current license to practice as a registered nurse.

Successful experience as a registered nurse for a minimum of 5 years in a hospital setting.

CPR/AED/First Aid Certified

RIDE Certification Requirements:
  • All Grades School Nurse Teacher, Grades PK-12
DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES, RESPONSIBILITIES AND CURRICULAR LINKAGES
  • Be responsible for documenting into skyward system all confidential initial health information for every student in the district
  • Send correspondence home to parents as it relates to students who are out of compliance per our state law
  • Communicate with school nurse list of non-compliant students and assist in obtaining required documentation to ensure students are in compliance
  • Assist MS and HS with setting up vaccinate before you graduate program clinics (VBYG)
  • Cover schools for nurses due to absence or emergencies
  • Assist all schools with mandated screenings when necessary
  • Plan and implement professional development for school nurse teachers
  • Assist with orientation and mentoring of new nurses
  • Work with Director of Nursing to plan quarterly meetings for school nurse teachers
  • Attend meetings with outside partner's as needed
  • Attend IEP meetings at school level when needed
  • Work in collaboration with registration to ensure all health records are distributed to schools in a timely manner
  • Participate in district meetings such as attendance team, crisis team, SEL team
  • Be available to assist the clinical and preschool teams with IEP's and translation of medical information
  • Monitor and assist with updating policies and procedures for school health program as mandated by national and state laws
  • Assist school nurse teachers with completion of DOH yearly immunization report
  • Cover for the Director of Nursing, PE/Health when needed
  • Perform other duties when assigned by Director of Nursing, PE/Health
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS STANDARDS
  • BA from accredited college/university
  • Current license to practice as a registered nurse
  • Certifies as a school nurse teacher through RIDE
  • Successful experience as a registered nurse for a minimum of 5 years in a l or school setting
  • CPR/AED certified
  • Commitment to the mission and vision of PPSD and the relevance of job functions to that mission and vision
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Knowledge with the Rhode Island Rules and Regular for school health program
