Teacher - Math Coach - Thomas Dale HS 2023-24

General Description

Provides support for teachers and schools for the Department of Mathematics and the Office of Curriculum and Instruction. Primary focus of the job function is at the secondary level. Complex work is performed within specific departmental objectives and policies; employee plans own work and coordinates with others as necessary. Contacts are regularly and frequently made at all organizational levels within and outside the departments to explain and implement programs and policies; considerable professional judgment is required.

Essential Job Functions
  • Collaborates with individual teachers or teams of teachers through co-planning, co-teaching and coaching.
  • Assists teachers in interpreting data and designing approaches to improve student achievement and instruction.
  • Promotes teachers' delivery and understanding of the district curriculum through collaborative long-range and short-range planning.
  • Facilitates teachers' use of successful, research-based instructional strategies, including differentiated instruction for diverse learners.
  • Arranges for professional development through collaborative investigations or discussion groups with teachers.
  • Conducts non-evaluative observations of teaching and learning to improve instruction.
  • Engages in research-based professional development and applies learned professional development practices.
  • Assists in development of CCPS curriculum and assessment resources.
  • Prepares and delivers staff development activities related to the Office of Curriculum and Instruction and/or the Departments of Mathematics.
  • Teaches classes on an as-needed basis as directed.
  • Demonstrates commitment to improving professional competence.
  • Assesses student learning on an ongoing basis and alters instruction to meet group/individual needs.
  • Uses the curriculum of the district to plan daily instructional activities.
  • Performs other work as assigned.

Budgetary Responsibility: N/A

Report Preparation Prepares periodic reports as required.

Equipment Operation: Uses standard office equipment and equipment related to education.

Contacts: Contact with all levels of CCPS personnel, students, parents

Work Direction/Supervision: Assists with development and revision of curriculum resources, lesson planning and instructional strategies.

Decision Making: Decisions are made with the Instructional Specialists, Teacher Consultants, building administrators, and teachers regarding mathematics and science issues under the guidelines of CCPS policy and procedures.

Formal Policy-Setting Responsibilities: N/A

Physical Demands: Must have the ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time; exhibit manual dexterity to use a telephone, to enter data into a computer terminal; to see and read a computer screen and printed material with or without vision aids; hear, understand speech and speak in audible tones so that others may understand clearly at normal levels indoors and on the telephone. Physical agility to lift up to 25 lbs. bend, stoop, sit on the floor, climb stairs, walk and reach overhead.

Work Environment: The employee regularly works in a school or office setting. The noise level is quiet to moderate.
Qualifications

Advanced knowledge of the content, concepts, principles and methodologies of mathematics and science education in a public school setting; of current curriculum development, Virginia Standards of Learning, program implementation of mathematics, learning theory, recent research, school organization, supervision and available state and local resources. Working skill in the use and access of a wide variety of media and technology to support job functions; proficient use of MS Word, MS PowerPoint, MS Excel, MS Access and MS Outlook preferred. Demonstrated ability to observe, monitor and evaluate mathematics programs and/or teaching and learning. Demonstrated ability to coordinate complex programs and activities. Demonstrated ability to organize, schedule and monitor work assignments. Demonstrated ability to train and advise staff and to communicate effectively, orally and in writing. Demonstrated ability in decision-making, problem analysis, conflict resolution, interpersonal relationships, program management and research and planning.

Requirements

Must hold a valid Virginia teaching license with endorsement in Mathematics. Master's degree and a minimum of five years of successful full-time secondary teaching experience, preferably at more than one grade level and professional development leadership experience is preferred.
