Job Overview : The Dean of Academics will inspire teachers to excel in their practice  to achieve their full potential providing instructional leadership to teaching and support staff, oversees the implementation of curriculum, coordinates assessments, and monitors students academic performance.  The Dean is also responsible for shaping and sustaining Mundo Verde’s culture and ensuring that teachers and  students internalize the school’s values for academic excellence and social justice.

 

 

As a unionized school that is beholden to a Contractual Bargaining Agreement (CBA), the Dean of Academics is responsible for understanding and implementing the requirements of this document. 

 

 

Reports To and Supervises: The Dean of Academics  reports  to the principal at the assigned campus and supervises a caseload of personnel designated by the principal. 

 

 

Responsibilities and Duties

 

 

Establish Strong School Culture and Coach Teachers to Improve Instruction: 

 

  • Coach teachers to cultivate a healthy classroom and school culture, modeling an approach to learning that emphasizes risk-taking, respect, curiosity and constant commitment to quality improvement; apply honest, actionable, and timely feedback that results in improved performance 

     

    Encourage culture of flexible and collaborative collegiality in which mission and goals of the school are the foremost focus of all decision making.

     

    Demonstrate strong people management skills, with the ability to motivate, inspire, develop, and collaborate with a diverse group of teachers, leaders, staff members, and community members 

     

    Support the Instructional Leadership with facilitation of PD sessions

     

    Support grade-level teams in developing strong meeting structures, including 1) weekly data meetings, and 2) weekly curriculum meetings (unpacking standards and implementing curriculum)

     

    Support with implementation of plans for performance improvement and progressive discipline, referring teachers to principal for serious infractions 

     

    Support and lead school behavioral pieces like arrival, hallway transitions, lunch, recess, dismissal and busses 

     

    Thrive in an innovative, reflective culture that demands flexibility and quick adjustments to meet student needs  

     

    Identify professional development needs, develop and lead professional development for staff 

     

 

Deliver Excellent Results Through Coaching and Observation

 

  • Hold coaching sessions and regular observations of teachers 

     

    Support teachers by providing clear feedback and actionable next steps 

     

    Collaborates with Principal to design, build and facilitate professional development experiences for the school faculty 

     

    Communicate teacher progress with the Principal 

     

    Manage and analyze student reading, math data to make recommendations to staff about instructional practices and/or school culture improvements 

     

 

Culture and Positive Discipline 

 

  • Assisting the principal with discipline management across the campus

     

    Support positive discipline in specific grades on daily and basis and cover for other grades as needed

     

    Monitor and support implementation of Responsive Classroom Practices through professional development, data-driven classroom coaching and support, and liaising with Student Support Team

     

    Consult to Principal behavior matters including bullying investigations, repeat crisis behaviors, and behavior intervention plans

     

 

Data-driven Professional Development

 

  • Support data team with the creation of the annual Data and Assessment Timeline

     

    Select data sets for grade level teams to analyze and respond to as a part of team data cycles

     

    Facilitate and provide protocols for academic data-driven decision making at the leadership, grade and classroom level

     

 

Compliance and Policy

 

  • Attend relevant informational trainings at OSSE and PCSB about assessment and instructional policies

     

    Represent Mundo Verde in city and sector-wide conversations about assessment and accountability

     

 

School Wide Support

 

  • Expected to attend (when relevant) and support pre-planned evening events throughout the year such as Expo, home visits, etc. as needed

     

    Expected to attend family events such as orientation, prospective parent info sessions, family potlucks, etc.

     

    Attend and participate in Leadership team meetings

     

  • Meet monthly with direct reports to evaluate progress, growth and performance using Mundo Verde's evaluation process

     

    Meet monthly with supervisor to evaluate progress, growth and performance using Mundo Verde’s evaluation process

     

    Support school safety by assisting with student arrival and dismissal procedures

     

    Other duties as assigned

     

 

Qualifications, Skills and Values

 

 

Qualifications

 

  • Master’s degree in the field of education, required 

     

    At least 5 years of teaching experience required and 2-3 years of school leadership or equivalent experience preferred

     

    Advanced or native proficiency in English and Spanish required

     

    Outstanding communication and interpersonal skills

     

    Demonstrated ability to coach, manage, and collaborate with adults from a diverse range of perspectives and backgrounds

     

    Strong data analysis skills

     

    Ability to build strong relationships with staff, students, families, and the community

     

    Belief that all students, regardless of background, have the ability to reach high levels of achievement

 Other Job Details

 

  • Schedule: Minimum of 8 hours per day

     

    Location: Cook Campus (30 P St NW, WDC) or Calle Ocho (4401 8th St NE, WDC)

     

    Position Type: This is a 12-month salaried position which is exempt and therefore not eligible for overtime pay under the provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act
