ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

In the Madison Metropolitan School District, the principal is a critical member of our leadership team. To ensure that each school is a thriving school that prepares every student to graduate college, career and community ready, the principal and assistant principal must demonstrate day one readiness in the following areas:

  • Equity Leadership
    Recognizes their role as a leader of anti-racist teaching and learning and in leading conversations about equity within the school community.
    Creates conditions to shape and transform mindsets of educators to center Black Excellence and anti-racist teaching as inherent to work
    Communicates clearly and persuasively with diverse individuals and stakeholder groups; demonstrates a leadership voice and presence as an accessible leader among peers, staff, parents, community members, and students.
    Builds their instructional vision based on staff qualifications and student academic needs, and to promote equity in access to effective instruction and support
    Openly engages staff, families and the community in dialogue about opportunity gaps and collaborates to develop innovative plans to eliminate racism that exists in schools
  • Human Resource Leadership
    Distributes leadership across the school, systematically leveraging staff members' strengths and demonstrated success with students to advance school goals and build capacity of staff.
    Gives staff regular, clear, and actionable feedback regarding their classroom practice and supports continued reflection and development of instructional practice among teachers.
    Uses school data to provide sustained professional learning opportunities that include whole staff training, teacher collaboration time and one-on-one coaching for teachers.
    Is able to recruit and select outstanding staff committed to the success of all students. Focuses on creating a workforce that mirrors the student demographic.
  • Instructional Leadership
    Creates, communicates and maintains a clear, compelling vision and School Improvement Plan that integrates current research, stakeholder input and other data and includes clear, measurable goals for improving student achievement.
    Develops capacity of individual teachers and teacher teams to engage in continuous improvement and focus on SIP goals
    Supports regular opportunities for teachers to collaborate, plan instruction, analyze data, and adjust practice.
    Understands and can teach others the principles of lesson design based on the needs of individual learners and to include culturally and linguistically responsive teaching strategies.
    Fosters school norms where teachers, teacher teams, and leaders regularly use and share results from continuous improvement processes to improve instruction, leadership practices, and student learning
    Understands research and best practice to support the design and implementation of a coherent instructional program.
  • Personal Behavior
    Consistently demonstrates emotional intelligence and dispositions aligned with district vision/values; maintains a stance of inquiry and respect.
    Consistently demonstrates ethical decision-making to fulfill obligations to students, public and the profession.
    Establishes a school culture that values creativity and innovative problem solving. Challenges the status quo to improve service to students.
    Develops and implements systems to generate feedback from stakeholders that results in improved school performance.
    Leads the staff in adopting cutting-edge practices, inspiring staff to challenge the status quo in the service of increasing students' college, career and community readiness.
  • Intentional and Collaborative School Culture
    Effectively assesses the culture of a school, providing the leadership needed to successfully implement school-wide improvement.
    Effectively anticipates and manages conflict.
    Develops authentic partnerships and communication with parents and families in a way to enable them to support student learning.
    Establishes effective teams and leverages them to support school improvement
    Engages teachers and/or other stakeholders in planning & initiative improvement processes and managing change
    Establishes a school culture that is relentlessly focused on the achievement and development of each student, while remaining positive, respectful, welcoming, and safe for all stakeholders.
    Builds capacity in teachers and other stakeholders to initiative improvement strategies and facilitate change management processes
  • School Management
    Effectively distributes leadership for monitoring school operations while ensuring a safe learning environment and escalating unresolved issues when needed.
    Establishes effective systems for monitoring SIP progress and effectively communicates results to staff.
    Keeps staff, students, and teachers focused on instructional time, keeping students & achievement at the center and minimizing external distractions
    Consistently assesses use of time to meet goals, priorities and deadlines
    Effectively aligns and monitors the school budget, including allocation of resources.
    Responds to requests for information in a timely manner
    Communicates with appropriate policy makers to influence local, state, and federal policies that directly impact the school.


Required Qualifications:

  • Currently in MMSD's Principal Pool.
  • Master's Degree in Educational Administration or related field.
  • Holds an Active Certification from Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction as Principal PreK-12 (51).
  • Evidence that candidate is eligible to be certified by the Wisconsin Department of
    Public Instruction as Principal PreK-12 (51) must be received prior to the start of employment; example: completed Principal program from accredited education institution.
  • Three years of successful teaching/classroom experience.
  • Demonstrated alignment to District vision and core values.
  • Demonstrated commitment to excellence with equity, anti-racism and Black Excellence.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience that drives school improvement.
  • Training, experience, and expertise in the following areas of education: working within an instructional team, standards-based instruction and assessment, culturally relevant and differentiated instruction, and technology skills to enhance professional learning and instruction.
  • Demonstrated ability in the use of data to improve student learning and in the design and implementation of professional learning experiences to enhance adult use of student data to improve practices and drive school improvement.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish relationships with students, staff, parents and the community.
  • Evidence of excellent: oral, written, computer- and web-based communication skills; organizational and group facilitation skills; communication skills among diverse audiences, including students, staff and community partners.
  • All MMSD positions require employees to commit to functioning from a common understanding about the history and effects of racism, structural racism and implicit bias.
  • Experience working cross-culturally and/or commitment to work toward improving one's own cultural proficiency i.e., valuing difference/diversity, recognizing personal limitations in one's skills and expertise, and having the desire to learn in these areas.
Desired Qualifications:

  • Leadership experience in an administrator, management and/or similar position within the field of education and/or prior experience leading a school.
  • Experience with Special Education programs and inclusive education.
  • Experience with Dual Language Immersion and/or Development Bilingual Education programs.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively supervise and evaluate professional staff.
  • Demonstrated ability to know and use appropriate community resources for students and families.
  • Fluent in Spanish and/or Hmong.
