Job Summary
The Senior Director of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion provides strategic leadership and programmatic vision around issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion in the Anchorage School District. The senior director works in partnership with ASD's senior leadership team to shape and sustain an inclusive community that is respectful and affirming of all its members.

Job Requirements
The following are required:
  1. A type B Alaska administrative certificate within six months of hire OR a bachelor's degree in education or a major social science field with significant coursework in education.
  2. Five to seven years of experience in one or more of the following: educational leadership, compliance, human resources, management, public administration, or a related field.
  3. Knowledge of principles, practices, and trends in educational leadership, public administration, organization, and management.
  4. Strong written and oral communication skills.
  5. Ability to establish and maintain productive working relationships with others.
  6. Ability to effectively supervise a department and build a cohesive team.
  7. Ability to make presentations and speak before groups in a training environment .
  8. Ability to organize, analyze, evaluate, and report DEI data.
  9. Ability to originate clear and concise reports and work independently.
  10. Ability to deal and communicate effectively with staff and outside agencies as well as persons of various ethnic, social, and economic groups.

The following are preferred:
  1. A master's degree, ideally in education or a field related to DEI.
  2. Skills and training in mediation and conflict resolution.


Essential Job Functions
  1. Collaborates with the Talent Management Department in identifying and implementing a culturally responsive recruitment and retention initiative.
  2. Plays a vital role in creating and implementing strategy and long-term plans for DEI that mirror, support, and extend the strategic vision of the school district.
  3. Creates and facilitates workshops and professional development sessions related to DEI topics.
  4. Supports faculty in managing complex conversations with students and families.
  5. Advocates for families and students from under-represented groups in ASD.
  6. Guides members of the school district in making culturally competent decisions that best reflect the district's mission, goals, and guardrails.
  7. Coordinates with academic leadership in developing and implementing specific plans to increase the number of underrepresented students in lottery/application-based programs.
  8. Consults with school and department leaders and staff regarding all DEI issues.
  9. Serves as a resource for principals, managers, and supervisors on all matters, including but not limited to Title programs.
  10. Serves as ASD's coordinator for Title IX.
  11. Coordinates ASD's sign language interpreter services for employees, applicants, parents, and community members.
  12. Works with Academic Services and the English Language Learners Department to ensure that a comprehensive language access plan is in place for students, parents, and community members.
  13. Works with and assists in coordination of the Multicultural Education Concerns Advisory Committee (MECAC).
  14. Represents ASD at community diversity events, programs, and functions, including speaking at engagements related to these topics.
  15. Serves as leader of ASD's Volunteer and Community Engagement programs.
  16. Coordinates efforts to fill special requests for DEI-related reports and information regarding related topics.
  17. Coordinates with High School Education and Teaching and Learning to lead the Equal Opportunity Schools initiative.
  18. Coordinates with Secondary Teaching and Learning in developing DEI plans for College, Career, and Life Ready work.
  19. Coordinates with Teaching and Learning to develop and implement Minority Leadership and Women in Leadership programs.

Physical /Mental Demands
The physical demands of this job require frequent standing, walking, sitting, speaking and hearing. Specific visual abilities are also required. The employee is regularly required to reach with his/her hands and arms and occasionally lift items weighing less than 40 lbs. Additionally, the employee must be able to understand vague and implicit instructions, be able to readily recall facts and details, handle conflict and make effective decisions under pressure. The employee must have the ability to effectively manage the stress of working with students, parents, and other employees representing diverse cultures, personalities, and work styles in a dynamic work environment.

Work Environment
Work is performed in a professional environment with a wide variety of individuals having differing functions, personalities and abilities, including working with diverse groups of people in a variety of different settings.

While performing the duties of this job the employee may be regularly exposed to a video display. The employee may be exposed to outdoor weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
