Job Summary
The Logistics Operations Supervisor is responsible for leading, managing, and directing the daily logistics operations of the Student Nutrition department including: central kitchen production, planning and scheduling; menu planning and scheduling; receiving, storage, issue, and inventory of food service items; and dispatch and routing of drivers and delivery trucks. The Logistics Operations Supervisor oversees the processing and operations of the Student Nutrition computer software and its integration into department operations. The position has a retirement association with the Public Employees' Retirement System (PERS).

Job Requirements
The following are required:
  1. A bachelor's degree in business administration, logistics or a related field. Equivalent experience, education, and training may be considered in lieu of the degree requirement.
  2. Minimum of five years of increasingly responsible supervisory level experience dealing with purchasing, receiving, inventory, and warehouse functions in a multimillion dollar operation.
  3. Three years of experience working as a supervisor in a large food service operation.
  4. Administrative and supervisory work experience must evidence strong leadership skills and ability to plan, organize, coordinate, monitor, and evaluate performance.
  5. Experience in using and managing automated warehouse, menu and production software.
  6. Required to pass a food handlers test within two weeks of employment.
  7. Familiarity with labor contract administration and grievance procedures.
  8. Ability to follow oral and written instructions and originate written reports.
  9. Ability to establish and maintain cooperative and productive working relationships with management, supervisors, administrators, and others.
  10. Experience in developing comprehensive and nested training development programs on multiple levels.
  11. Working knowledge of wireless inventory systems and warehouse bar code systems.
  12. Knowledge of formal scheduling procedures.
  13. Knowledge of purchasing, receiving, warehousing, storage, distribution, and inventory.
  14. Knowledge of safe warehouse practices.
  15. Demonstrated project development skills, including needs assessment, identifying team members, establishing timelines, and managing internal and external resources needed to take projects from planning to implementation.
  16. Knowledge of personnel practices and procedures, equal employment policies, and negotiated agreements.

The following are preferred:
  1. Experience with integrating multiple logistics disciplines including food production, transportation, and warehousing
  2. Experience with school food service management software suites such as One Source, Primero Edge, or similar.
  3. Experience working with wireless systems.
  4. Ability to be flexible and adapt to organizational changes.
  5. Knowledge of formal scheduling procedures.
  6. Demonstrated project development skills, which include needs assessment and establishing timelines and internal and external resources required to take projects from planning to implementation.
  7. Knowledge of personnel practices and procedures, equal employment policies, negotiated agreements and grievance procedures.
  8. Knowledge of financial management techniques in modern food service programs.


Essential Job Functions
  1. General duty requirements
    1. Responsible for recruitment, development, motivation, and retention of assigned staff conforming to budget objectives and HR policies
    2. Provides guidance to staff in problem solving, project management, and project evaluation
    3. Regularly analyzes staff key performance indicators and modifies procedures to maintain positive growth.
    4. Participates in Student Nutrition decision making activities related to food, menus, equipment, hardware and software selection.
    5. Participates in periodic contract negotiations between ASD and union bargaining groups.
    6. Proposes changes as needed to reflect changing business conditions, technology, and state and federal compliance requirements.
    7. Responsible for staffing decisions regarding staff vacancies.
    8. Ensures that direct reports appropriately plan, coordinate, schedule, rehearse and implement training for all staff levels.
    9. Manages a safe work environment and routinely presents safety programs.
    10. Reviews annual evaluations to ensure subordinates are monitoring performance and planning for follow-up action.
    11. Establishes goals and expectations for increased operational efficiency and monitors performance accordingly.
  2. Central Kitchen production:
    1. Provides oversight and direction to central kitchen production to ensure efficient operations.
    2. Coordinates the interface between menu planning, central kitchen production, inventory issue and accounting, delivery schedules, and school requirements.
    3. Develops, implements, and monitors key performance indicators within the central kitchen and adjusts procedures accordingly.
    4. In conjunction with the Senior Director, develops and implements new and innovative programs into production.
  3. Warehouse Operations:
    1. Responsible for inventory functions of issues, receipts, back orders, reorders, and inventory reconciliation.
    2. Processes and schedules transfer requests. Evaluates the effectiveness of work performed.
    3. Recommends the purchase of supplies, materials, and equipment.
    4. Establishes safety programs for the department.
    5. Determines condition and completeness of supplies and equipment received.
    6. Responsible for assisting the director with the overall operation of the warehouse work flow.
  4. Delivery and Logistics:
    1. Monitors and oversees the daily delivery of items to schools
    2. Develops and implements best practices.
    3. Reviews and analyzes equipment status for periodic renewal and replacement.
    4. Responsible for monitoring maintenance status and ensuring vehicles receive proper scheduled and unscheduled maintenance
  5. Menu planning and scheduling:
    1. In conjunction with Dietitian, Director, Business Manager, and Supervisor Operations, plans, coordinates and synchronizes the development of menus.
    2. Coordinates the menu with production to ensure most efficient scheduling of meal items
    3. Ensures menu items are selected for cost, storage considerations, and other factors.
    4. Coordinates with Purchasing Department for procurement from vendors
  6. Software management:
    1. Serves as the department lead for all components of the department's software system
    2. Assists in the troubleshooting of software issues and coordinates with IT and software vendors for resolution

Physical /Mental Demands
The physical demands of this job require frequent standing, walking, sitting, speaking and hearing. Specific visual abilities are also required. The employee is regularly required to reach with his/her hands and arms and occasionally lift items weighing less than 40 lbs. Additionally, the employee must be able to understand vague and implicit instructions, be able to readily recall facts and details, handle conflict and make effective decisions under pressure. The employee must have the ability to effectively manage the stress of working with students, parents, and other employees representing diverse cultures, personalities, and work styles in a dynamic work environment.
