Position Summary

This is a full time (1.0 FTE) position on the 12-month work schedule.

The Database Administrator (DBA) will support student achievement by expanding and optimizing our data architecture, data flows, collection and reporting for cross functional teams. The DBA will support our software developers, database architects, data analysts and district administration on data initiatives.

The Database Administrator manages the Student Information System (SIS), including responsibility for maintenance, availability, integrity, and security of the division's SIS. The DBA will be responsible for Student Information System database management and security as well as providing end-user support, reporting functions, and design of specialized utilities. The DBA will serve as the primary contact for the system's vendors and user-groups.

Four years experience maintaining and administering SQL compliant database systems required. Past experience must demonstrate increased responsibility over time. The successful candidate will possess outstanding customer service skills, and be a team player. Bilingual proficiency and/or multicultural experience strongly preferred.

Essential Functions
  • SQL Server and Oracle Database Administration.
  • Database administration includes maintenance and monitoring of Microsoft Windows clusters, database upgrades, security, performance monitoring and tuning, backup and recovery, application server installation and maintenance, server installation and maintenance, VMWare, NetApp setup and maintenance, powershell scripting, end user support, data queries, data maintenance, and data fixes.
  • School information system applications management includes patching, installation of new releases, troubleshooting new module installation and configuration, and working with vendors for problem resolution for Windows servers.
  • Data warehouse system management includes database maintenance and dashboard upgrades.
  • Implementing features in the school information system software such as importation of school photos, immunizations.
  • School Information Systems Administration and integration with other 4J systems such as transportation, SchoolPays, Library services, and integration with 3rd party systems such as SWIS, mealtime, etc.
  • Windows updates for the school information system servers.
  • Create and maintain data integrations between our production systems
  • Assemble large, complex data sets that meet functional / non-functional business requirements.
  • Assist in managing data integrity, data analysis, presentation development, data collection, program evaluation, and electronic records management
  • Manage student information system and ensure data integrity
  • Identify, design, and implement internal process improvements: automating manual processes, optimizing data delivery, re-designing infrastructure for greater scalability, etc.
  • Collaborate with internal and external teams to improve data models that feed business intelligence tools, increasing data accessibility and fostering data-driven decision making across the organization.
  • Implement processes and systems to monitor data quality, ensuring production data is always accurate and available for key stakeholders and business processes that depend on it.
  • Build high-performance algorithms, predictive models, and prototypes.
  • Applies SIS system patches and upgrades as provided by the system vendor. Tests, debugs, installs, and maintains computer programs and all appropriate system and end-user documentation and instructions. Coordinates with other members of the division in developing comprehensive end-user training, including accurate data input and validation.
  • Serves as Systems database manager and systems operator, and performs end-user support including setting up user profiles, assigning security controls, and storage management. Analyzes data handling procedures for efficiency, effectiveness, and security. Assists or performs audit trails. Performs routine and periodic backup and restore operations.
  • Analyses all observed and reported system errors affecting the division Student Information System. Recommends or develops procedures and processes to prevent errors from occurring and data/program recovery procedures to assure maximum data integrity. Reports errors to the system vendor and coordinates responses, fixes, and patches as required.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Demonstrated ability to build the infrastructure required for optimal extraction, transformation, and loading of data from a wide variety of data sources using SQL or other ETL tools
  • Demonstrated ability to develop complex queries and routines for data extractions, uploads, and processing for various third-party systems, Oregon DOE reporting, and online SOL testing purposes.
  • Ability to verify data integrity
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze end-user requirements, determine report functions and capabilities including specific output layouts with detail and summary items, break-out subtotals and totals, etc.
  • Ability to troubleshoot with a logical approach to work

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree in Management Information Systems, Computer Programming, Database Administration, or related field of study or comparable certification such as MCDBA, MCSD, is preferred;
  • Master's Degree in related area is preferred, or equivalent level of experience in designing and maintaining enterprise-level database systems and programs may substitute.
  • At least 4 years' experience maintaining and administering SQL compliant database systems such as SQL Server, Oracle, or MySQL. Advanced knowledge in data retrieval tools such as SQL and/or Crystal Reports. Must be familiar with application systems/programming in a Windows environment and web applications.
  • Knowledge of and experience with Synergy or similar Student Information System in a database administrator role is preferred.
  • Knowledge, skill and ability in working collaboratively with a variety of people at various levels and diverse backgrounds.
