General Definition of Work

Under the direction of the principal and supervising teacher, the Instructional Paraprofessional assists in the daily supervision and instruction of students.

Essential Funtions
  • Follows the directions of the teacher and/or principal.
  • Supervises students in instructional situations in the manner prescribed by the teacher and/or principal.
  • Consults with the teacher concerning academic expectations for individual students.
  • Becomes aware of the academic standards used in monitoring progress and implements those standards.
  • Uses time efficiently in working with a group of students so that each child is helped as needed.
  • Uses good judgment in interpreting a lesson and/or supporting teacher instruction in a group situation.
  • Assists the teacher and/or principal whenever possible in meeting the needs of each child.
  • Supervises students in the classrooms, hallways, bathrooms, playground, and at rest time in a safe, structured, and positive manner that supports the expectations of the teacher and/or principal.
  • Consults with the teacher and/or principal concerning behavioral expectations for the children in different situations.
  • Observes the quality and style of teacher-prepared materials so that the same standards will be maintained in materials prepared by the instructional paraprofessional.
  • Correctly operates the office machines that are necessary for preparation of materials.
  • Prepares materials in the most time-efficient manner.
  • Uses time wisely so that materials are ready when needed.
  • Other duties as assigned by the supervising teacher or administrator
Qualifications

All paraprofessionals hired to perform instructional duties must meet one of the following criteria:
  • Completion of at least two (2) years of study at an institution of higher education (four-year college or university); or
  • Attainment of an Associate degree, at a minimum; or
  • Demonstration of knowledge and the ability to assist in instructing reading, writing, and mathematics through a formal state or local academic assessment.

Ability to work closely with teachers; ability to communicate effectively with students and adults, and such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable.
