  • Job Description of the 4th-8th Grade School Counselor and High School Matriculation Counselor

    The duties of the SC include but are not limited to the following:
    1. Perform duties as a member of the ICSJ Student Support Team as requested by the principals which helps facilitate the overall operation of the educational program;
    2. Maintain confidentiality and discretion regarding school and student matters;
    3. Lead the high school matriculation program for the seventh and eighth grade students which includes meeting with 7th and 8th grade students and parents during the summer and throughout the school year;
    4. Set and maintain a schedule for classroom observations, consult with and advise administration, learning specialist, reading specialist, and teaching staff on student concerns (social, emotional, developmental, behavioral) and refer to appropriate specialists when necessary (speech and language, occupational therapy, grief, behavioral, cognitive evaluations, etc.);
    5. Schedule and lead individual parent meetings and provide meeting summaries when necessary;
    6. Collaborate with Counselors, Learning Specialists, and other staff to review and discuss caseload;
    7. Review, articulate, and assist with documentation of student IEP/504/ICEP to classroom teachers and work with Counselor, Social Worker, and Learning Specialists to assist with writing academic, behavioral, and social goals as necessary;
    8. Develop a comprehensive school-counseling program to assist students in developing goals, positive self image and overall awareness of future academic and career opportunities;
    9. Implement and create supports for students as they transition from grade to grade and school to school (ie. working with third grade to fourth grade transitions, note taking, test taking strategies, etc.);
    10. Provide social emotional, and behavioral interventions to address student needs and increase student success through individual meetings, small groups, and classroom lessons (ie. check in/check out with students, target behaviors);
    11. Support and evaluate Responsive Classroom and executive functioning at all grade levels, participate in forming discipline procedures that support the best interest of all students using restorative action ie. Mean Behavior Rubric, provide or refer training for teachers when necessary;
    12. Implement, monitor and evaluate RULER social and emotional curriculum. Co-lead staff RULER PD, assist in classroom execution of RULER, and prepare/lead parent RULER PD.
    13. Meet weekly with the Administrative Team to inform and communicate school/student needs;
    14. Counseling team collaborates to lead campus transition experiences for 3rd grade students and parents;
    15. Meet weekly with the student support team to communicate school/student needs;
    16. Create a parent educational program addressing social-emotional topics, as needed.

    Expectations of the School Counselor (SC)

    The expectations of the SC at ICSJ School include the following:
    1. Is punctual and dependable with regards to the work schedule;
      1. Dates of Service: August 14, 2023-June 14, 2024
      2. Monday through Friday - 7:30AM - 3:30PM, due to parent meeting schedules, may be subject to change when mutually agreed upon in advance;
    2. Attire is professional and appropriate for a school environment;
    3. Participates in professional development opportunities including before and after school staff meetings on days when scheduled to work or when needed to support the Student Support Team or the Administrative Team;
    4. Collaborates with Administration, Director of Student Support Staff, and Student Support Team;
    5. Sign in and out of the employee time log.
