THIS IS A LONG TERM SUB POSITION to fill a temporary vacancy that will finish on the last day of the 2022-2023 school year.

Under direction of the school principal and/or appropriate supervisor, the LTS (Long Term Substitute) will gain essential and meaningful teaching experience. Excellent performance in this capacity will position a teacher well to compete for permanent teaching positions in Providence Schools and elsewhere.

Compensation and benefits for this position are equal to the compensation and benefits of a regular teacher including salary according to the Providence teacher salary scale (including during school vacation) on a step determined by previous teaching experience (credit given for experience in accredited schools and/or in a certified capacity). Other benefits include paid sick days, generous health benefits, and paid professional development.

EDUCATION TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university

RIDE Requirements:
Elementary Education Teacher, Grades 1-6
AND
All Grades English to Speakers of Other Languages Teacher, Grades PK-12

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES, RESPONSIBILITIES AND CURRICULAR LINKAGES
  • Provide direct instruction of English Language Development to identified ELC students based on most recent data
  • Provide recommendations for programming and placement of ELs in the building
  • Collaborate with school and district level staff to continuously improve instruction for English Learners
  • Work in conjunction with principals and faculty to develop and sustain professional learning communities at the school sites
  • Work with administration and teachers to consistently use effective teaching practices to incorporate the Language Standards into all content areas.
  • Work with the principal and leadership team to ensure frequent monitoring and assessment of student learning
  • Be knowledgeable of current teaching methodologies, strategies and research for implementation of language development supports
  • Build an understanding of second language acquisition (i.e culturally responsive classroom, language development, classroom environment, instructional modifications, and best practices, etc.) for all educators working with ELs
  • Serve as a resource in identifying appropriate instructional strategies and interventions for English Learners as they acquire English and content knowledge
  • Ensure the effective and equitable integration of EL students in the general education setting
  • Provide assistance to colleagues in making the CCSS and the Next Generation Science Standards accessible to ELs at their current grade levels
  • Build capacity of General Education, Special Education, and itinerant teachers to meet the language development needs of ELs
  • Collaborate with Teacher Support Teams to develop and implement plans designed to assist struggling English Learners.
  • Participate in IEP meetings for English Learners, acting as EL liaison and team member to provide information and interpret data in relation to second language acquisition, time in program, educational history, and student demographics.
  • Ensure all ELs receive appropriate EL accommodations for local and state assessments
  • Support state and local administration of assessments while adhering as closely as possible to daily schedule
  • Assist with assessment administration, record keeping, and reporting as required in conjunction with the Office of Research, Planning and Accountability
  • Support teachers in interpreting data and student information in relation to second language learners/acquisition
  • Perform all other duties as assigned
  • Assist in the implementation of all state and locally mandated assessments in which ELLs participate
  • Maintain, organize and share data as appropriate
  • Maintain grades as appropriate
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS STANDARDS

  • Belief that English Learners, their cultural backgrounds, and home languages are assets to our district and community
  • Approach English language learning from an additive vs deficit perspective
  • Having a growth mindset for students and self (on a continual pursuit for self-growth, open to feedback and coaching)
  • Strong organizational and communication skills
  • Ability to analyze data to inform instruction
  • Knowledge of the WIDA Standards, Stages of Language Acquisition, English Language Development resources, current research and research-based practices in teaching English as a new language
  • Knowledgeable of current teaching methodologies, strategies and research for implementation of language development supports
  • Ability to design and deliver instruction utilizing research-based teaching practices for ELs
  • Ability to collaborate with colleagues and effectively lead teams of teachers in making accommodations for ELs within the core
  • Ability to analyze data to inform instruction
  • Demonstrated proficiency with PC-based computer applications, Microsoft Office applications, e-mail, web applications, google drive, and industry-specific technology.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills
  • Follow through on school and department commitments in a timely manner
  • Experience working with dually identified English Learners (preferred)
  • You must complete the new hire compliance training prior to your first day of employment
  • Bilingual Preferred
  • Selected candidate will be required to pass a pre-employment criminal history background check. Selected candidates cannot begin work until passing their background check.
