FAMILY LIAISON

DEFINITION: Works in the schools to improve student academic achievement by connecting families, schools, and communities.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

  • Building Administrator -Provides co-supervision and co-evaluates the performance of the building liaison.

  • Family Services Director-Provides oversight in financial management, operations, and program support. Co-supervises and evaluation with building administrators.

  • Family Services Program Manager- Provides oversight, training, coaching, and support to liaisons. Co-supervises and co-evaluates with building administrators.


PRIMARY DUTIES

  • Provide direct support for students, families, teachers, counselors, and school administrators by bringing community resources (food security services, integrated healthcare access, benefits enrollment programs, parent education programming, etc.) into our schools.

  • Assist schools in identifying and advocating for students who could benefit from community resources (medical, dental, vision, mental health services, enrichment and recreation opportunities, academic assistance, CHP+/Medicaid, and other public assistance, etc.)

  • Help families navigate school systems, including preschool and kindergarten enrollment, FRL applications, Individual Education Program (IEP) roles and responsibilities, after-school programming, and family governance and leadership.

  • Active team member of the student services and MTSS, special education, early childhood, and mental health teams to connect students and families with resources and support to engage them in the learning process.

  • Improve student academic achievement by connecting students, families, schools, and communities through outreach and communication.

  • Support schools and the community with family engagement opportunities.

  • Participate in onboarding training consistent with good practice and ongoing professional development in leadership, communication, and family development.

  • Maintain collaboration and communication with school staff, acting as a liaison between children's teachers and their families regarding academics, health, and well-being.

  • Focus on family development by building on the strengths of each family to help them achieve their goals and decrease family stressors impacting student engagement, learning, and academic success.

  • Provide orientation and ongoing support to the school for new families. Assist families in enrolling their children in schools.

  • Cultivate trusting relationships with district families to identify, assess, and strategically address the needs of students and families.

  • Provide interpretation and translation services as available for families and students

  • Communicate with the Family Resource Center Director regarding student needs and available resources, including funding.

  • Act as building Homeless and Migrant Education Liaison.

  • Facilitates family meetings as needed.

  • Fulfill mandated reporting requirements.


  • QUALIFICATIONS

    • Bilingual, bi-literate, bicultural in Spanish and English

    • Understanding of children with special health care needs

    • Basic understanding of the stages of child development and language development

    • Recognize potentially hostile situations and defuse situations appropriately.

    • Knowledge of the available community resources

    • Knowledge of various computer programs and technology

    • Principles and procedures for record-keeping

    • Principles of business and letter writing and basic report preparation

    • Basic mathematical principles

    • Work efficiently with a service-oriented attitude under stressful situations with frequent interruptions.

    • Work independently in the absence of supervision.

    • Effectively manage time and multiple responsibilities.

    • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.

    • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

    • Interpret and apply District policies and procedures.

    • Independently prepare correspondence and memoranda.

    • Implement and maintain a standard filing system.

    • Ability to develop relationships with a diverse community


    EXPERIENCE & TRAINING GUIDELINES

    • Two years of experience working with school-age children and their families.

    • High school diploma or equivalent. Supplemental education is preferred.

    • Ability to obtain and maintain a valid driver's license.

    • Two or more years of experience working with linguistically and culturally diverse families


    WORKING CONDITIONS

    • Office environment; exposure to computer screens. Travel from site to site.

    • Physical Conditions: This position requires the ability to give tours of schools and the community. There will be walking, climbing stairs, and sharing spaces.

    • Primary functions may require maintaining the physical condition necessary for sitting for prolonged periods; using a computer keyboard.


    SALARY RANGE AND DAYS WORKED
    Hourly range: $21.00 - $25.10 per hour, depending on qualified experience.
    Days worked: 185 days/year (with paid personal time, paid vacation days, and paid time off for holidays and district non-work days such as during winter break and spring breaks)
