General Description

Position is responsible for providing Behind-the-Wheel instruction for students in the Driver Education program. Behind-the-Wheel is offered before and after school and during the summer.

Essential Job Functions

Responsibilities include delivery of approved course content, utilization of best instructional practices to support the behind-the-wheel curriculum. The instructor should effectively communicate, display proficiency with record keeping, and collaborate with the School In-Car Coordinator.

Qualifications

Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. Demonstrates professionalism and contributes to a positive environment. Working knowledge about Driver Education program regulations. Skillfully manages individual, group, and organizational interactions. Effectively uses verbal, nonverbal, writing, and listening skills. Averts problem situations and intervenes to resolve conflicts. Exercises self-control and perseverance when dealing with students. Completes paperwork timely and accurately. Maintains an acceptable attendance record and is punctual.

Requirements

A teacher of In-Car Driver Education must meet the following requirements:
  • Hold a valid Virginia teaching license with an endorsement in driver education or meet the requirements for paraprofessional driver education teachers.
  • Possess a valid Virginia driver's license with at least five (5) years driving experience.
  • Have a satisfactory driving record as outlined in section 46.2-340 of the code of Virginia which reads in part:

"If a driver's license of an in-car driver education teacher is suspended or revoked, or such person is convicted in any court of reckless driving or driving while intoxicated, or if the driving record of such person accumulates more than six demerit points based on convictions occurring in any calendar year, he/she shall be removed from teaching in-car."

Note: Safe driving points shall not be used to reduce the six demerit points.
  • Meets all mandated health requirements (e.g., a negative tuberculosis test, etc.).
  • Must be fingerprinted and have documented results of a clear criminal record.
  • Complies with drug-free workplace rules and board policies.
  • Education and experience should demonstrate the ability to perform essential job functions.

  • State Police Criminal History Investigation
  • Child Protective Services (CPS) Investigation
  • Tuberculosis Screening/Test
