PASS/FAIL
A civil service test will be administered to create an eligible list of candidates for this classified civil service position. Once created, the list will be used for all Electrician Building Controls vacancies that may occur for one year.
The test will be administered after the job posting closes and all applications are screened. You will be notified by Human Resources of the test via email.
EXAMINATION: This test is available for promotional and open entrance candidates.
Practical Exam.......................................Weight 100%
You will be notified of the results of the examination through email. Candidates who pass the examination with a score of at least 75% will be placed on the eligible list.
Works under the supervision of the Lead Automation Electrician or the General Lead Electrician
Pay,Benefits, & Work Schedule
This is a 12 month position working 40 hours per week.
Salary and benefits are in accordance with Electrians negotiated labor agreement. The labor agreement and salary schedule can be found at https://www.spps.org/Page/33566. The minimum rate of pay for this position is $53.65 hourly.

- Installs and maintains computer and associated equipment which is dedicated to govern industrial controls, via the Tridium Automation System
- Repairs and maintains starters, clock systems, public address systems, motors, transformers, switches, lighting, fuses, breakers, control boards, electric receptacles, meters, fans, signal systems, bell and buzzer systems, HVAC equipment, boiler control wiring, and similar items related to automation controls and the electrical system
- Installs automation systems which includes programming controllers, motor starters, security systems, VFD's, etc.
- Performs interior and exterior wiring; assembles, wires, and makes repairs related to above mentioned systems.
- Traces circuitry, diagnoses malfunctions and adjusts controls to achieve peak performance; adjusts voltage, gain, stability, and other characteristics of circuits.
- Determines suitability of automated controls and equipment in terms of objectives and recommends or redesigns circuits as necessary.
- Designs, develops, and evaluates new units of electronic equipment.
- Arranges, mounts, and wires components on a chassis to ensure that possible source of electrical interference are physically isolated or shielded, and securely mounted to the chassis to avoid malfunctioning under extreme conditions of temperature, shock, and vibration.
- Willingness to obtain certifications and updates which allow for installation; maintenance of automation, lighting control and security control systems.
- Perform other related duties as assigned
- Considerable knowledge of laws, rules, and regulations such as National Electrical Codes, and O.S.H.A., dealing with high voltage work, installing and maintaining high voltage electrical raceway and installation, bonding, grounding, and over current protection.
- Considerable knowledge of electrical and electronic block diagrams, wiring diagrams, and schematics in order to understand the construction and operation of industrial controls and troubleshoot malfunctions.
- Considerable ability to operate a computer for the purposes of viewing and manipulating the automation system, sending, receiving emails, operating the work order system, research for ordering materials, etc.
- Considerable knowledge of how to install, maintain, and troubleshoot heating, ventilation, and air conditioning controls.
- Considerable knowledge of the operation of security system equipment including microphones, amplifiers, motion sensors, ultra-sonic sensors, card readers, door contacts, glass break detectors, Bosch Lenel equipment, etc.
- Considerable knowledge of the operation, capabilities, and limitations of electronic control equipment and systems.
- Working knowledge of pneumatic, hydraulic, and mechanical systems.
- Considerable skill in operating a variety of hand and power tools safely, and in caring for the tools.
- Working skill in troubleshooting complex electronic systems.
- Considerable ability to read and understand documentation in the form of instructions or manuals, maintenance schedules, operating, and troubleshooting guides, etc.
- Considerable ability to coordinate work with other skilled trades employees.
- Considerable ability to estimate the costs of materials and labor for electrical work.
