The School Board of Floyd County Public Schools invites applications and nominations for the position of Superintendent.

The County

Floyd County, located atop the Blue Ridge Plateau in southwestern Virginia, is an unique mountain community known for its music, natural beauty, arts, and diverse, caring people. This haven is removed from the rush of urbanity, yet alive with the sounds, colors, and textures of rural life. The Division

Mission: The educators of Floyd County Public Schools are committed to excellence in education, equality of educational opportunity, and the recognition of each student's individuality. Inasmuch as students differ in their rate of physical, mental, emotional, and social growth, learning opportunities are provided that are consistent with personal development and potential. In order for the school division to ensure that every student achieves at high levels, it has engaged in partnerships with parents, community businesses, and local service agencies.

Qualifications

The school board has established the following qualifications for the next superintendent of Floyd County Public Schools:

  • An earned doctorate is preferred.
  • Experience as a superintendent or associate/assistant superintendent is preferred.
  • Teaching or public school administration experience in Virginia is preferred.
  • Residency in the school division will be required.

Leadership and Management Skills – The successful candidate will be a team player, comfortable with shared decision-making, a motivator, visionary, creative thinker, and a decisive leader.

Personal Characteristics – The successful candidate is a good listener, accessible, caring, and consistent.

Board-Superintendent Relations – The successful candidate effectively mediates and accommodates different perspectives, provides options and recommendations to the board before accepting board directives.

Staff Relations – The successful candidate creates an atmosphere of trust and mutual respect, maintains open channels of communication to and from staff, and sets a good example for staff members.

Community Relations – The successful candidate effectively advocates for school issues and needs, actively partners with community organizations, and responds to individual concerns in an appropriate manner.

School Finance – The successful candidate lobbies for school funding on behalf of the school division, develops and explains rationale for budget to the board and local officials, and offers creative funding solutions.

Areas of Expertise – The successful candidate has expertise in curriculum and instruction, budget and finance, and school reform (e.g., strategic planning, total quality management, etc.).
