Job Summary:

The interpreter provides interpreting services for students who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing. The interpreter facilitates communication through use of a sign language mode that fits the needs of the student(s). The interpreter facilitates cultural mediation, and knowledge about visual accessibility, participates as a team member to plan, review and share information; and serves as a resource to other school personnel requiring assistance with students who are hard of hearing and/or Deaf.

Essential Job Functions:

This list of essential job functions is not exhaustive and may be supplemented as necessary. Depending upon individual assignment, the employee may perform all or a combination of several of the following duties:

Communication:
  • Provide interpreting and/ transliterating for Deaf / hard of hearing and hearing students in the educational settings
  • Adapts language level to communication needs of the student for the purpose of ensuring optimum visual communication
  • Performs signing and other language activities, which give evidence that Deaf and/or hard of hearing students are profiting from the use of the interpreter
  • Prepare for demanding course materials necessary for successful interpreting / transliterating
Liaison:
  • Assists as a resource to educators for the purpose of orienting staff to the functions of an interpreter
  • Assists in modifying classroom logistics for the purpose of meeting the needs of student(s) who are deaf and/or hard of hearing
  • Establish as fully as possible a supportive and sympathetic relationship with student(s) without fostering or encouraging intense emotional involvement
  • Serve as a resource person if and when requested to do so for the student(s) IEP team conferring about one of the student(s)
  • Assist in education of staff about note-takers and captioned materials
  • Preform related duties as assigned
Professionalism:
  • Follow the NAD-RID Professional Code of Conduct
  • Render the message transparently, always conveying the content and intent of the speaker, using the language most readily understood by the consumer(s) being served
  • Keep all assignment -related information strictly confidential unless requested to give information to the IEP team about the student's skills regarding use of interpreter services, do not give/include opinions about student's academic or social progress
  • Never counsel, advise, or interject personal opinions into interpreted situations
  • Maintain consistent presence at assigned worksite and regular work hours
  • Professionally interact with students, staff, and public
  • Comply with all district policies and procedures
  • Perform related duties as assigned
Desired Skills:
  • Demonstrates interest and competence in working with children
  • Demonstrates fluency in needed modes of signed language (ASL, PSE, CASE, or SEE as needed) as evidenced by industry standard EIPA passing scores or plan to achieve such scores
Minimum Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Completion of Interpreter Training Program
  • Previous school-based experience preferred
  • Experience and/or training with cultural, ethnic, and language diversity preferred
  • Successful Washington State Patrol and Federal Bureau of Investigation Fingerprint Clearance
  • Proof of Immunization (if born 1/1/57 or later)
  • I-9 Employment Eligibility in compliance with the Immigrations Reform and Control Act
  • Completion of all district-required training within thirty (30) calendar days from hire date
Work Environment:

Work is typically performed in and around a student learning environment; may be exposed to childhood diseases; may be required to balance and crouch, crawl, bend, or kneel; stand for prolonged periods; may be exposed to high noise levels; and may experience a multitude of demands and changing priorities with frequent interruptions.

Evaluation

The Interpreter for the Deaf or Hard of Hearing shall be evaluated periodically by the Executive Director of Special Education pursuant to the currently established district procedures and evaluation criteria. The process shall include an evaluation of the employee's performance of the above essential job functions.
