The School Board of Buchanan County Public Schools invites applications and nominations for the position of Superintendent.
The County
Buchanan County, named after the 15th President of the United States, James Buchanan, is a hidden gem in the heart of far Southwest Virginia. This picturesque county spans across 504 square miles and is situated just miles away from the state borders of Kentucky and West Virginia. The county is nestled in the Southwest Virginia region and lies in the rugged Appalachian Plateau portion of the Appalachian Mountains.
The Division
Buchanan County Public Schools serves a total of 2,328 students across 9 schools, divided into 4 Elementary/Middle schools, 4 High Schools, and 1 Career and Technical school. The district's mission is to provide all students with equal opportunities to achieve their maximum educational potential and become responsible and productive members of society. The district's vision is encapsulated in the statement "Our Children, Our Future, Our Responsibility." The district employs a total of 441 full-time personnel, consisting of 169 classified, 243 professional, and 29 support staff. The district boasts a high graduation rate of 91.2%. The district's operating budget for the year is $49,100,327.00.

The candidate selected for the position must agree to become a resident of Buchanan County within 6-8 months after accepting the position.
Education and Training:
- Experience as a division superintendent preferred Experience as a central office administrator preferred Building-level leadership experience preferred Experience as a classroom teacher preferred

- Develops a plan for recruiting and selecting top quality staff members Maintains open channels of communication and creates an atmosphere of trust and mutual respect Understands the laws concerning personnel policies and procedures Sets a positive example for staff members Supports staff development activities and encourages professional growth
Community Relations:
- Effectively advocates for school issues and needs Responds to individual concerns in an appropriate manner Successfully manages division communication and press coverage Communicates effectively with both private and public stakeholders, including parents and community members
School Finance:
- Develops and explains the rationale for the budget to the board and local officials Offers creative funding solutions and advocates for school funding on behalf of the school division Closely supervises budget development and procedures Advocates for school funding on behalf of the school division
