Pickens County Schools, Jasper, Georgia

The Pickens County Schools’ Board of Education is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Superintendent of Schools. Applications will be accepted through March 19, 2023 at 11:59 p.m. EST. See the application process below for more information.

The Community

Pickens County, Georgia sits at the edge of the Blue Ridge Mountains (at the southern end of the Appalachians). The Cherokee Indians populated this area of North Georgia from the late 1700s until the 1830s when the land was distributed to European settlers.

The Georgia General Assembly passed an act on December 5, 1853, to create Pickens County from portions of Cherokee and Gilmer Counties. Named for American Revolutionary War General Andrew Pickens, the county received several more land additions from Cherokee (1869) and Gilmer (1858 and 1863); and several sections of Pickens were transferred to other counties including Dawson, Gordon and back to Cherokee.

Jasper has a small town community feel nestled in the foothills of the beautiful North Georgia mountains with quick access to metro Atlanta to our south.

Renowned for its exceptionally pure marble, most of Pickens County’s early industry revolved around marble mining. Henry Fitzsimmons established the first marble quarries and the first marble mill in the 1830s.

Mount Oglethorpe, our highest peak at 3,288 ft, was the original Southern terminus of the Appalachian Trail. Other notable peaks include Sharp Mountain and Sharp Top Mountain.

When you visit Pickens County you’ll discover nature, history, shopping, festivals, and more!

Our state of the art facilities for athletics and other extracurriculars, strong financial position with no debt, single high school serving as the flagship of our system, and some of the best views of any high school in Georgia add to what makes Pickens County a great place for students and staff.
