JOB TITLE: Supervisor of Secondary English Language Arts

REPORTS TO : Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment

POSITION SUMMARY:
Under the direction of the Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment, the Supervisor of Secondary English Language Arts (ELA) provides leadership and support for all 7-12 District ELA initiatives and is responsible for the full implementation of these programs. The Supervisor of Secondary ELA ensures the instructional program is aligned to state and national standards, culturally responsive, data-informed, and strategically addresses a multi-tiered system of supports. The Supervisor guides the Secondary ELA department in evaluating instructional methods, establishing rigorous college and career-ready expectations, implementing strategies to improve equitable student outcomes, and aligning professional learning needs to the outcomes of the District's Strategic Plan.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Coordinates proven, research-based methods and strategies for curriculum reform.
• Collects and analyzes student performance data to improve products and services delivered to schools and to develop plans to meet identified student needs.
• Provides leadership in designing and developing new programs and initiatives to meet identified needs.
• Coordinates the design, support, and implementation of quality professional learning opportunities in literacy and English Language Arts for principals, coaches, teachers,
and support staff consistent with District and national professional development standards.
• Researches, analyzes, and make recommendations for the enhancement, redirection, and/or expansion of current literacy programs and services.
• Monitors the quality and implementation of the English Language Arts programs and makes adjustments as needed.
• Supports and meets monthly with the lead English Language Arts teachers.
• Provides assistance and support to teachers, school administrators, and central office staff engaged in the monitoring, implementation, and coaching of literacy programs and instruction.
• Observes literacy instruction in classrooms and provides feedback.
• Ensures alignment of curriculum and instructional strategies to the Common Core State Standards.
• Collaborates with the Executive Director of Student Services, the Director of Multilingual Learners and school-based administrators to coordinate targeted support and implement innovative language arts
programs that support the unique needs of all student populations, including diagnosis and progress monitoring for students.
• Ensures that District initiatives comply with state standards and federal guidelines.
• Meets regularly with District personnel, curriculum writers, and principals to monitor and support successful student outcomes.
• Develops and presents information and programs to professional staff groups and community groups.
• Works with community and school groups to build knowledge of effective curriculum and instruction practices.
• Creates a Department Plan that focuses on continuous improvement and addresses the current needs of students and staff to accelerate teaching and learning.
• Articulates vision and goals to a range of audiences and stakeholders.
• Collaborates with the Office of Research, Assessment and Evaluation, evaluates and recommends appropriate assessment to ensure timely screening, diagnosis and progress monitoring for students.
• Partners with the Office of Youth, Family, and Community Engagement to establish quality programs for families that support literacy education, and provides leadership for establishing community and
university partnerships that support and expand outreach of literacy initiatives to the broader community.
• Stays abreast of current research, best practices, and trends related to literacy.
• Assists in the development and management of budgets to support and maintain quality District literacy and English/Language Arts programming for grades 7-12.
• Assists in negotiating and managing contracts with partners supporting English language arts work in the District.
• Provides regular updates of programs, professional learning activities, and data to stakeholders.
• Supervises and supports the high school library/media specialists to ensure a robust library/media program is available to all students.
• Performs other functions as assigned by the Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Master's degree from an accredited college or university with specialization in the areas of literacy and curriculum and instruction; coursework in English language arts and
English literature and reading instruction required.
• Sixth Year in Educational Leadership, Administration, and Supervision.
• Five years of successful leadership experience (building leader/principal, assistant principal, and instructional coach).
• Significant K-12 urban leadership experience in assessing program needs, curriculum development, program implementation, and staff training; or other combinations of applicable education,
training, and experience which provides the knowledge, abilities, and skills necessary to perform effectively in the position may be considered.
• Knowledge of research-based curriculum, instruction, and assessment practices.
• Knowledge of Common Core and Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium.
• Experience using instructional technology to support teaching and learning, curriculum development, staff training, and program and student accountability.
• Outstanding organizational skills and great attention to detail; outstanding written and oral communication skills.
• Ability to manage multiple priorities, adapt to change quickly, and meet deadlines
• Proactive problem solver who demonstrates initiative.
• Strong work ethic coupled with an enthusiastic and passionate approach to one's work.
• Commitment to the belief that all students can learn, to educational equity, and the vision and mission of New Haven Public Schools.

CERTIFICATION / ENDORSEMENT REQUIREMENTS:
• Certification in English 7-12 ELA (015)
• Certification in Intermediate Administration or Supervision (092)
• Certification in Remedial Reading K-12(102) or Reading Consultant (097) - Preferred

SALARY AND TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: 12-Month work year. Local 18, Group G, School Administrators Association of New Haven, Inc.

EVALUATION: Evaluated annually by the Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment
