Originally founded in 1991 as Harlem RBI, DREAM has grown to annually serve more than 2,500 youth across East Harlem and the South Bronx through a network of six PreK-12, extended-day, extended-year DREAM Charter Schools and community sports-based youth development programs. Through our commitment to rigorous academics, social-emotional learning, deep family and community engagement, and health and wellness, we create lifelong learners who are equipped to fulfill their vision of success in and out of the classroom. We dream big, as well, with an aggressive five-year plan to expand to serve 3,500 students across seven schools-growing our organization's impact and leveling the playing field for all children. The Middle School Principal-in-Residence (PIR) will work closely with a current DREAM principal as the academic and cultural leader of a school while preparing to lead a DREAM elementary school, upon successful completion of the 1-2 year residency. This is an ideal opportunity for a dynamic, high-achieving educator to drive their job-embedded professional development and the growth of DREAM's unique school model to provide more students with rigorous academics coupled with social-emotional enrichment.

Responsibilities

    • Successfully complete DREAM's Principal-in-Residence program, including successful completion of professional development opportunities, tasks, evaluation components, and cohort activities (including some afterschool and weekend sessions);
    • With coaching and guidance from the mentor Principal, participate in job-embedded learning to gain proficiency in DREAM's Principal competencies in leading school-wide initiatives in instructional, culture, and operations, talent development and recruitment;
    • Perform all duties of assigned school leadership position (as applicable), which may include:
    • Refine and create systems and routines, including a rich, engaging and rigorous curriculum and high-expectations;
    • Implement DREAM's observation and feedback systems and lead professional development for teachers;
    • Serve as an instructional coach for a designated group of teachers, leading their development and on-going improvement of high-quality instruction through a variety of strategies, including lesson observations, regular review of data, collaborative planning and inquiry, and coaching and mentoring;
    • Develop meaningful relationships with DREAM students and their families;
    • Ensure high levels of student achievement and rigorous instruction;
    • Develop and implement school policies as a member of DREAM's School Leadership Team;
    • Build a shared vision among all teachers of skillful instruction and develop and train teachers to become content experts through both internal and external professional development opportunities;
    • Systematically use multiple data sources to drive instruction, curriculum, professional development and student supports;
    • Manage a tiered program of responsive support to ensure the success of all students with learning needs;
    • Build strong and responsive special education programming to ensure success in school for students with special needs, including compliance with special education laws;
    • Collaborate with the school leadership team to drive the implementation of extended school day activities.

Qualifications:

    • Bachelor's Degree required; Master's Degree in educational leadership preferred;
    • Extensive elementary or middle school instructional (school or program based) experience with evidence of driving strong student outcomes, preferably in a high-performing charter school setting;
    • 2+ years of academic, program, and/or school culture leadership experience with a track record of driving results, preferred;
    • Extensive knowledge of best practices in classroom management and instructional strategies;
    • Exemplary interpersonal skills and an understanding of adult learning strategies to provide mentoring and coaching;
    • Successful experience in leading professional development in large group, small group and one-on-one settings, preferred;
    • Ability to use a variety of data sources to drive student outcomes;
    • Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with faculty, staff, peers, and parents;
    • A strong belief in the mission and values of DREAM, including the desire to make a difference in the lives of our students, families, and community.

Compensation:

    • The Principal-in-Residence stipend is $10,000, which is in addition to the salary associated with the primary role of the PIR. The salary range for incoming Academic Deans, Deans of Culture, and Deans of Programs is $90,000 to $105,000. Incoming salaries are determined based on the number of years of leadership experience and internal equity. All leaders are eligible for annual performance-based salary increases. Because we value staff tenure in each role, we do not currently cap salary ranges.

Other benefits include dental and vision plans, disability, life insurance, parenting benefits, flexible spending account options, generous vacation time and paid holidays, referral bonuses, professional development, an employee assistance program (EAP) and a 403(b) retirement plan with employer matching up to 4%.
