The Director of Executive Communications serves as a member of the APS communications team and is primarily responsible for writing major addresses, briefs, remarks, and talking points for the superintendent and senior leadership. The incumbent also directly supports the Office of the Superintendent and district senior leadership by developing and implementing strategic communications plans that effectively communicate-via the executive office-the District's mission and vision, annual priorities, and progress.
Additionally, the incumbent manages targeted media placements, monthly board meeting communications, and other special writing projects as needed. The incumbent is jointly responsible for reputational management activities and crisis communications activities, in partnership with the Director of Media and the Executive Director of Communications.
Required Skills:
- The ability to capture the unique voice of a presenter when creating written remarks
- Excellent verbal and written communication, presentation and facilitation skills
- Expert-level copyediting and proofreading skills
- Ability to quickly produce high quality, audience-specific written content
- Advanced knowledge of Google apps, Microsoft Office Suite
- Ability to explain complex problems and solutions in a clear, concise and compelling way
- Experience with research and writing projects that address diverse audiences and topics
- Working knowledge of social media, video/photography, website content management and all other components of a full-service communications department
- Organized with a keen attention to detail
- Excellent customer service skills
- Flexible and adaptable to changing priorities
- Comfortable in a deadline-driven environment
- Ability to effectively interact with all members of the communications team and the organization
This position requires occasional evening/weekend work hours, and prompt, regular attendance in-person and on-site during regular business hours and as needed. This position reports to the Executive Director of Communications.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
Requirements :
EDUCATION:
Bachelor's degree in communications, public relations, marketing, journalism, or related field required. Master's degree preferred.
CERTIFICATION/LICENSURE:
Valid driver's license and availability of private transportation, or the ability to attend off-site events
WORK EXPERIENCE:
Minimum of 10 years progressively responsible experience in communications, public relations or marketing; minimum 2 years experience speechwriting for senior level executives.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:
The ability to capture the unique voice of a presenter when creating written remarks; Excellent verbal and written communication, presentation and facilitation skills; Expert-level copyediting and proofreading skills; Ability to quickly produce high quality, audience-specific written content

ESSENTIAL DUTIES
- Researches, drafts, and copy-edits remarks, scripts, speeches, talking points, blogs executive-level correspondence and strategic messaging on behalf of senior leadership to support communicating the District's mission and vision.
Contributes content to APS newsletters, social media channels, and other communications channels on behalf of senior leadership. - Develops and implements the communications strategy for the superintendent and senior leadership.
Leads the communications strategy for the annual state of the district address.
Works closely with the communications team to align strategic messaging with other communications priorities. - Provides training and consultative support to school-level communications ambassadors.
Attends district events to provide support and story coverage for the superintendent. - Collaborates with the editorial team to maintain a year-round editorial calendar; ideates, prepares, and pitches story ideas for inclusion in the district editorial calendar.
- Contributes to the production of communications materials needed for monthly Board of Education meetings.
- Serves on the district's crisis communications team during school and district emergencies.
Builds and sustains relationships with key education advocates, and internal and external stakeholders.
Provides monthly reports and tracking of key communications projects.
Performs other duties as assigned by the appropriate administrator.
Required to attend scheduled shifts during regular business hours as mandated.
