FUNCTIONAL PURPOSE

The purpose of the position is to provide district-wide accessibility and assistive technology services to the full spectrum of EC students, in preschool through high school, in order that they may access and benefit from their program of education. The Assistive Technology (AT) Specialist provides assistive technology evaluations and support in the areas of reading, writing, and classroom access per the IEP process and provides technical support to teachers and training to students during the course of the evaluation. The position also provides ongoing follow-up and training post-evaluation related to the implementation of assistive technology devices and strategies that allow students to access and benefit from their program of specialized instruction consistent with District goals and objectives.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Collaborating with colleagues and parents to share information and expertise to plan and implement effective communication programs for EC students.
  • Applying basic knowledge of functional curriculum.
  • Participating as a member of a multidisciplinary team to make recommendations for augmentative communication and assistive technology accommodations and strategies.
  • Participating in IEP meeting for students who need augmentative communication and assistive technology supports for the purpose of developing an appropriate IEP.
  • Proficiently use technology to communicate, compile reports, and collect data for the purpose of providing accurate records and communicating with team members, parents, administration, and district staff.
  • Provide diagnostic services for students referred through a systematic referral process for the purpose of accessing functional curriculum.
  • Provide in-service training and consultation to staff and parents on assistive technology.
  • Serves on District committees, task forces, work groups, etc., as requested. Keeps abreast of changing developments, trends, instructional and educational technologies.
  • Provides direct AT services and technical support as indicated on students' IEPs.
  • Coordinates the delivery of AT services with classroom teachers, special education staff and other providers to ensure continuity and consistency in providing comprehensive special education service to students.
  • Collaborates with other district-level service providers as indicated by student needs.
  • Maintains an accurate record of services provided.
  • Maintains cooperative, professional attitudes with peers and supervisors.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
  • Knowledge of current trends in augmentative communication, accessibility, and assistive technology services for public school students.
  • Knowledge of switch access, UDL, and SETT framework.
  • Knowledge of K-12 general education academic standards, as well as extended content standards.
  • Knowledge of appropriate augmentative communication and assistive technology assessments protocols.
  • Working knowledge of the principles, practices, and ethical standards of assistive technology; relevant state and federal laws, rules and regulations; and applicable district policies and procedures.
  • Ability to deal effectively and appropriately with students, parents and other educational professionals regarding student concerns and problems.
  • Ability to consult and provide training to school personnel in developing and implementing the use of assistive technology.
  • Ability to communicate ideas clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing.
  • Strong ability in record-keeping and organizational skills.
  • Ability to transport self between and among school sites throughout the district.
  • Expert computer literacy
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
  • Minimum: Bachelor's degree in Special Education or related field.
  • Desirable: Five years classroom teaching experience.
CERTIFICATION AND LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS:
  • Possession of a valid North Carolina driver's license and clean driving record.
  • Possession of one of the following: valid Teacher License, OT License or SLP License.
