OBJECTIVE:
Boston Public Schools seeks an The Office of Academics and Professional Learning ensures all
educators have access to the knowledge, skills, and resources that they need to provide every
BPS student with a high-quality, culturally and linguistically sustaining, and well-rounded
education that prepares them to actively and responsibly read, write, reason, communicate,
create, and compute effectively within a global society.

POSITION OVERVIEW :
The World Language Program Director resides in the Office of Academics and Professional Learning within the Boston Public Schools, reporting to the Director of World Languages. The Program Director of World Languages will assist the Director in the implementation of standards-based instruction and professional development for the district. The Assistant Director will ensure that the world languages program is a planned, articulated curricula that helps students develop skills in three modes of communication (Interpersonal, Presentational, Interpretive); develop insight into the target culture and that of students' own; develop positive attitudes towards people of diverse backgrounds; and develop a willingness to take risks in their endeavors in learning a new language.The Program Director is responsible for providing curricular guidance, support, training, coaching, and modeling, and collaborating to advance the mission of the Boston Public Schools.

The Program Director is expected to have expertise in the content of World Languages including the 2021 Massachusetts World Languages Curriculum Frameworks, the ACTFL National World Languages Standards, and BPS Essentials for Instructional Equity. This person should be prepared to collaborate meaningfully with colleagues in central office departments, school/regional administrators, teachers and teacher leaders, families, and outside partners to strengthen World Languages teaching and learning for all students in all schools so that all students graduate from high school well prepared for college, career, and life in a global society.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities
  • Develop and provide professional development to support the improvement of core instruction and the implementation of the 2021 MA World Languages Curriculum Frameworks;
  • Support teachers in the effective implementation of research-based instructional practices using standards-aligned instructional materials to improve student outcomes;
  • Develop standards-aligned thematic units of instruction and integrated performance-based assessments across all languages offered;
  • Assist school-based supervisors with establishing effective world language educator hiring practices, educator performance evaluation processes and supports;
  • Assist the Director in the Implementation of the Massachusetts State Seal of Biliteracy;
  • Lead data driven research into MA State Seal of Biliteracy results and share with individual schools and the district leadership team;
  • Provide coaching/support to new world languages teachers in the district;
  • Evaluate and support 3 AWC elementary world languages teachers;
  • Develop, implement, and communicate supports that enable the supervision and evaluation of World Languages instruction in schools to ensure continuity from pre-kindergarten through graduation;
  • Participate in classroom and school visits focused on effective standards-aligned instructional practices in World Languages, review data on student performance in World Languages, and provide teachers and administrators with next steps to strengthen language teaching and learning.

QUALIFICATIONS - REQUIRED:
  • Master's degree in Education with a concentration in world languages or related field of study;
  • 5+ years teaching world languages with 2 plus years administrative experience preferably in an urban environment similar to Boston;
  • Professional License Certification in the teaching of world languages;
  • Minimum Advanced Low level of language proficiency in a language other than English;
  • Demonstrated leadership qualities and strong interpersonal skills necessary for working effectively with students, teachers, administrators, and families;
  • Knowledge of equitable teaching practices that provide access and support the development of language fluency in order to build strong identities;
  • Ability to work independently under tight deadlines to achieve goals successfully as required;
  • Growth mindset and high degree of cultural competence;
  • Excellent analytical, oral and written communication skills;
  • Excellent technology skills (e.g., Google Classroom, Excel)
  • Detailed oriented with effective organizational skills, and ability to coordinate and prioritize multiple projects simultaneously;
  • Ability to work effectively and efficiently individually and in a team oriented, fast paced environment both within the department and across departments;
  • Current authorization to work in the United States.

QUALIFICATIONS - PREFERRED:
  • Experience working within a large urban district;
  • Massachusetts Professional Supervisor/Director (or equivalent administrator) certification;
  • Experience in developing, implementing, and/or evaluating standards-based world languages program/curriculum;
  • Experience writing and implementing integrated performance-based assessments and thematic curriculum units of instruction;
  • Knowledge or experience with grant writing/management;
  • Experience implementing the Massachusetts State Seal of Biliteracy;
  • Advanced Low language proficiency in one of BPS' official languages: Spanish, Creole (Cape Verdean), Creole (Haitian), Chinese, Vietnamese, Portuguese, Somali
