JOB DESCRIPTION

JOB TITLE: Grounds Crew Leader
Building Operations

REPORT TO: Supervisor-Grounds Crew

WAGE/HOUR STATUS: Nonexempt

PAY GRADE: AUX 5

PRIMARY PURPOSE:
The Grounds Crew Leader is responsible for onsite leadership of day-to-day grounds crew staff to ensure that district grounds are safe, neat, and attractive.

All employees of Spring ISD are expected to act with integrity, support organizational goals, communicate in a clear and respectful manner, championing the needs of our students and drive continuous improvement.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required:
  • High school graduate or GED from an accredited institution
  • Valid Texas driver's license
  • At least two years of experience in lawn, gardening and landscape maintenance
  • At least two years of supervisory experience in a related field

Preferred:
  • At least four years of experience in lawn, gardening and landscape maintenance
  • At least four years of supervisory experience in a related field

SPECIAL KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS:
  • Knowledge of gardening and landscape maintenance
  • Ability to read and interpret landscape plans
  • Ability to perform mathematical calculations
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions, diagrams, and manufacturer's manuals
  • Ability to learn and perform tasks in all skilled areas
  • Knowledge of potential hazards and necessary safety precautions involved in use of equipment required by the job
  • Ability to direct and supervise personnel
  • Effective organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
  • Provide training and orientation to all grounds personnel in safety procedures and proper and safe use of tools and equipment.
  • Follow established safety procedures and techniques to perform job duties including lifting and climbing.
  • Correct unsafe conditions in work area and promptly report any conditions that are not immediately correctable to grounds crew supervisor.
  • Operate tools, equipment, and machinery according to prescribed safety procedures.
  • Follow established procedures for locking, checking, and safeguarding equipment and facilities.
  • Follow district safety protocols and emergency procedures.
  • Monitor and assist with mowing and detail of all district grounds as indicated or according to work orders.
  • Monitor and assist with care for grass, trees, shrubs, and flowers by planting, watering, pruning, fertilizing, mulching, caring for beds, and controlling weeds.
  • Monitor and assist with the collection and disposal of leaves, dirt, rubbish, and refuse from district facilities.
  • Monitor and assist with all grounds work and oversee completion.
  • Assign priority to work orders and process them, including tracking of labor and material use.
  • Interpret plans and sketches to carry out landscape designs.
  • Establish and maintain care and watering schedules, including spraying, fertilizing, and pruning.
  • Monitor and assist with installation, testing, adjusting, and repairing sprinkler systems as needed.
  • Monitor and assist with the inspection of grounds and facilities and initiate needed repairs.
  • Monitor and assist in keeping vehicles supplied with tools and materials.
  • Monitor and assist in moving equipment from facility to facility.
  • Monitor and assist in the erection and maintenance of playground equipment.
  • Follow all safety regulations.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
  • Supervise grounds crew staff.

MENTAL DEMANDS/PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS:

Tools/Equipment Used: Safety goggles; rubber gloves and back support belts as needed; garden tools; small hand tools; power tools; heavy equipment including backhoe, tractor, grader; and power mower; ladders; scaffolds; light truck or van.

Posture: Frequent standing, kneeling/squatting, bending/stooping, pushing/pulling, and twisting; work in tiring and uncomfortable positions

Motion: Frequent walking, grasping/squeezing, wrist flexion/extension, and overhead reaching; frequent driving

Lifting: Heavy lifting and carrying (45 pounds and over) on a daily basis

Environment: Work outside, on slippery or uneven walking surfaces; frequent exposure to extreme hot and cold temperatures, dust, noise, vibration; exposure to chemical (herbicides and fertilizer) and electrical hazards; work around machinery with moving parts; work with team members; may work alone; regularly work irregular hours; occasional prolonged hours; frequent districtwide travel

Mental Demands: Maintain emotional control under stress.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

The usual and customary methods of performing this job require the following: ability to work in a fast-paced, labor-intensive work environment efficiently and effectively with frequent interruption. Overtime is required as necessary.

That number will change soon with the construction of several new facilities – including two middle schools, three ninth-grade centers and a state-of-the-art stadium that will serve the entire district – all funded by a bond referendum approved by voters in 2016.
