POSITION SUMMARY:

The Service Writer takes complaints and defect reports from drivers and translates them into work orders for the Service Department. This position requires a working knowledge of school buses and medium duty truck systems in order to expedite repairs.

The shop is open from 4:00 am to 12:00 am (midnight) Monday - Friday. There are instances when the shop may close later or open earlier based upon the needs of the students.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
  1. Takes repair requests from drivers and enters them into the fleet management system to create work orders and when necessary, start the parts ordering process and determine warranty status.
  2. This task includes working with bus drivers to pinpoint complaints/defects and crawling under a bus, when necessary.
  3. Monitors bus emergency channel on the radio and keeps an accurate log of calls to include breakdowns and deferred repairs.
  4. Works with the Master Fleet Technician to provide daily lists to Operations of available spare buses.
  5. Maintains an accurate and active Out-of-Service list.
  6. Enters completed work orders as received by the mechanics and files completed orders daily.
  7. Monitors a shared mailbox to process offsite request and communicates with offsite mechanics to streamline workflow.
  8. Enters vendor invoices into fleet management software as repair orders as they are completed.
  9. Prioritizes and distributes repair requests.
  10. Keeps in constant communication with Fleet Foreman and Fleet Manager to ensure an accurate OOS report.
  11. Other responsibilities will include: data entry, filing, parts ordering, and radio communications with drivers, and handling of spare vehicles.
  12. Required to have prompt, regular attendance in-person and be available to work on-site, in-person during regular business hours and as needed.
  13. Performs other duties as assigned by an appropriate administrator or their representative.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES:
  • Knowledge of all systems on school buses and/or medium duty trucks required
  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Excel, Outlook, Dolphin, Zonar and Word
  • Requires great attention to detail
  • Must be able to translate a driver complaint into a proper request for repair
  • Ability to use two-way radio
  • Ability to prioritize repair requests before passing on to Master Mechanic
  • Must be able to multitask


Requirements :

EDUCATION:
  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Technical training preferred.

CERTIFICATION/LICENSE:
  • Class B license required within 6 months of employment.

WORK EXPERIENCE:
  • Minimum of one year of verifiable mechanical service experience: technician, service writer, or operator are all acceptable.
