SUMMARY:
Guide or control vehicular or pedestrian traffic at such places as streets and schools.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The following tasks describe the basic functions of the job; not all tasks may be performed by each employee. Duties and assignments may vary based on location assignment and academic year. The following frequencies and percentage of time spent are approximations only.
  • Direct or escort pedestrians across streets, stopping traffic as necessary. Stay within the crosswalk and never crosses diagonally in order to ensure liability protection. [Daily, 40%]
  • Monitor traffic flow to locate safe gaps through which pedestrians can cross streets. [Daily, 15%]
  • Communicate traffic and crossing rules and other information to students and adults. [Daily, 15%]
  • Distribute traffic control signs and markers at designated points. [Daily, 5%]
  • Direct traffic movement or warn of hazards, using signs, flags, lanterns, and hand signals. [Daily, 5%]
  • Report incidents involving students to the building principal. [Daily, 5%]
  • Record license numbers of vehicles disregarding traffic signals, and report infractions to appropriate supervisor. [Daily, 5%]
  • Perform other related duties as assigned or requested. [Daily, 5%]

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Wear appropriate clothing such as light colored slacks, light colored shirts, and a safety vest.
  • Must meet all Colorado Department of Transportation minimum qualifications:
    • Average intelligence;
    • Good physical condition, including sight, hearing, and ability to move and maneuver quickly in order to avoid danger from errant drivers;
    • Ability to control a STOP paddle effectively to provides approaching road users with a clear, fully direct view of the paddle's STOP message during the entire crossing movement;
    • Ability to communicate specific instructions clearly, firmly, and courteously;
    • Ability to recognize potentially dangerous traffic situations and warn and manage students in sufficient time to avoid injury;
    • Mental alertness;
    • Neat appearance;
    • Dependability; and
    • An overall sense of responsibility for the safety of students.
  • Intermediate knowledge of proper bicycle/pedestrian practices.
  • Ability to adhere to the following Colorado Department of Transportation requirements: While on duty, a guard shall not eat, smoke, use other tobacco products, or consume beverages. While in uniform, a guard shall not patronize liquor establishments. A guard shall not use a radio (other than a two-way radio for official communication), headphones or portable audio players, nor read books, magazines, newspapers, or other materials while on duty. Any mobile communication device may be used only in an emergency and never while crossing children.
  • Criminal background check and fingerprinting required for hire.

REQUIRED CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, AND REGISTRATIONS:
All certifications, licenses, and registrations must be valid and unexpired.
  • Colorado state identification card.

  • Experience working directly with people from diverse racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
  • Racially conscious and culturally competent with the skill, will, capacity, and knowledge to commit to a culture of continuous improvement.

PHYSICAL AND MENTAL DEMANDS/WORK ENVIRONMENT:
  • Extended periods of standing and walking.
  • Frequent bending, reaching, and motioning with hands and arms.
  • Occasional lifting, pulling, and pushing.
  • Repetitive motions.
  • Close, distance, color, and peripheral vision.
  • Visual concentration, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
  • Eye/hand coordination.
  • Speaking and hearing.
  • Ability to blow a whistle.
  • Ability to step up and down curbs.
  • Ability to hold a handheld stop paddle sign above head.
  • Always exposed to outdoor weather conditions.
  • Usually a noise environment.
