    Position Title: Special Education Instructional Assistant (E)
    Department: Instruction
    Reports to: Principal
    FSLA Status: Non-Exempt
    Terms of Employment: 190 days

    GENERAL SUMMARY:
    Under close supervision of certified teacher, works with one or a small group of students with disabilities to provide instructional support, physical help and/or emotional support needed during school. Assists teacher with various classroom activities. Reports to the assigned teacher(s), Principal or Director of Special Services.

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: (Other duties may be assigned.)
    • Assists teacher with academic instruction and classroom activities; prepares and disseminates materials for classroom activities.
    • Assists teacher in the instruction of daily living routines such as personal hygiene, toileting, dressing, self-feeding, drinking, etc.
    • Ability to effectively monitor students engaged in independent study or similar work.
    • Demonstrates the ability to observe and assist individual students that are experiencing difficulties.
    • Assists students in such physical tasks such as; dressing, putting on and taking off outerwear, moving from room to room, using the lavatory, eating, getting on and off of school buses, etc.
    • Demonstrates the ability to perform other classroom clerical tasks; prepares, compiles, and makes copies of instructional materials and reports, files classroom or student records.
    • Sets up classroom for special activities and other instructional materials appropriately. Adjust special equipment for students as needed.
    • Ensures the classroom is maintained in a neat and orderly fashion.
    • Maintains student attendance records and tracks student data as directed by professional staff.
    • Performs miscellaneous tasks such as distributing materials, scheduling parent or teacher appointments, ordering supplies, scheduling tutoring, escorting students to other areas of the school, etc..
    • Operates various types of equipment such as copier, computer, laminator etc.; uses various materials and supplies such as cleaning agents, arts/crafts supplies, etc...
    • Maintains the confidentiality of personally identifiable data on students.

    QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

    EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE:
    Associates degree preferred, 60 hours college credit from an accredited college, or high school diploma with a passing score on the ParaPro Exam (WIN) or WorkKeys and a demonstrated aptitude for performing instructional assistant duties and working with students with disabilities.

    Assistive Technology and Technology Experience

    LANGUAGE SKILLS:
    Ability to read and interpret documents and procedure manuals. Ability to assist with writing reports as needed. Ability to speak and present effectively before staff and parents.

    MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:
    Ability to assist with basic mathematical skills with students.

    REASONING ABILITY:
    Ability to interpret a variety of technical instructions with IEPs and other accommodations made for each student.

    KNOWLEDGE:
    • Knowledge of classroom activities pertaining to the specific duties on the job.
    • Knowledge of the policies and procedures of the organization.
    • Knowledge of the materials and information that must be prepared for classroom instructional activities.
    • Knowledge of the records and reports that must be completed and maintained.
    • Knowledge of the special needs of (emotionally and/or physically) students with disabilities.
    • Knowledge of the maintenance and operation of equipment generally used by students with disabilities, e.g. wheelchairs, chair lifts, etc...

    SKILLS and ABILITIES:
    • Ability to provide supplemental instruction to students with disabilities through explanation and demonstration, or supervised practice.
    • Ability to assist teacher in various classroom and instructional activities.
    • Ability to supervise students, individually and in groups, in and out of the classroom during short periods of time.
    • Ability to effectively assist the teacher to instruct and assist student with disabilities in academic as well as personal health and hygiene activities.
    • Ability to operate general office equipment such as a copier, computer and telephone.
    • Ability to assist in preparing materials for classroom activities.
    • Ability to communicate effectively with students, teachers, and all other groups involved in the activities of the job.

    PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
    The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand and walk and hear. The employee is occasionally required to stand and reach with hands and arms. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, seeing objects/persons at a distance, and ability to adjust focus.

    WORK ENVIRONMENT:
    Conducts duties in a classroom environment with no significant exposure to environmental conditions.
    Requires ability to work under a degree of stress related to duties that require constant attention and working with disabled children. Physical demands include general classroom activities as well as lifting and moving children (generally weighing up to seventy-five pounds) to/from wheelchairs.
    No travel is required.
    TERM OF EMPLOYMENT:
    The terms of employment detailed in this job description are based on full time employment during an entire school year. Conditions of employment are adjusted for part time employees or individuals who are hired for less than an entire school year.

    EVALUATION:
    Performance of this job will be evaluated annually according to Board Policy.
