The Data Support Position (Part-time/Temporary Position) works within the Office of School Counseling and Postsecondary Advising (OSCPA), reporting directly to the OSCPA Senior Data Strategist. The role works in collaboration with other Chicago Public Schools offices and departments, administrators, school-based staff, and external partners to carry out the mission of OSCPA: To ensure that Pre-K-12 postsecondary teams (School Counselors, Coaches, others engaged in advising) implement comprehensive, student-centered, data-informed practices to positively impact academic, social-emotional, and postsecondary outcomes of all students in the district. This is a part-time/temporary position that will be compensated for time worked on an hourly basis. The work schedule for this role will consist of an estimated 20-30 hours per week for an anticipated period of 10 months beginning in February 2023 and ending in December 2023. Due to the part-time/temporary nature of this work, this is not a benefit-eligible position.

Job Summary:

The Data Support Position (Part-time/Temporary Position) position is to aid the data team of OSCPA to meet the data needs of the district in the areas of school counseling and postsecondary. The Data Support Position (Part-time/Temporary Position) works with a level of independence and professional discretion under leadership in OSCPA. The Data Support Position (Part-time/Temporary Position) work is governed and evaluated by acceptable professional practice, school and district policies and regulations, and provision of the Illinois State Board of Education.

The Data Support Position (Part-time/Temporary Position)will be held accountable for the following responsibilities:
  • Complete assigned data requests for internal department staff and occasional external stakeholders (within CPS or outside research partners)--data requests include a wide range of needs from pulling student data based on certain criteria to more complicated analytical tasks with merges, disaggregation, summary, and/or data visualization as well as working with survey data
  • Assist with data management and feature upgrades (research and development) for our internal department data dashboards that are built in Google Data Studio/Looker
  • Maintain and troubleshoot/fix data trackers built in Google Sheets
  • Other projects may also be assigned based on skills/experience

In order to be successful and achieve the above responsibilities, the Data Support Position (Part-time/Temporary Position) must possess the following qualifications:

Education Required:
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university
  • Master's degree from an accredited college or university in related field (preferred) or specific continuing-education training in data analysis/data science

Experience Required:
  • Demonstrated experience working across and combining multiple, large datasets
  • Intermediate-level SQL statement capacity
  • Understanding of how to merge data from a SQL database with flat files like .csvs
  • Advanced Google Sheets/Excel skills including pivot tables, complex formulas, named ranges, vLookup
  • Basic data visualization skills
  • Capacity to clearly summarize data for presentation-deck bullet points
  • Ability to operate effectively in a fast-paced environment, managing multiple projects with varying deadlines
  • Analytical and organized with acute attention to detail

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • GSuite
  • SAS (strongly preferred) or other data analysis programming language
  • Google Data Studio/Looker or other experience building data dashboards with a GUI
  • Familiarity with CPS data tables (e.g. from being a former or current CPS employee, research partner employee, etc.) or other education databases, especially high-school data
  • Google App Script (preferred)
  • Alchemer or other survey software (Qualtrix, etc.)
  • Experience working in a data warehouse or across multiple data systems
  • Familiarity with task management/project management tools, Smartsheet preferred
  • Unyielding commitment to continuous improvement and an unwavering belief that all students can achieve at high levels

Conditions of Employment

As a condition of employment with the Chicago Public Schools (CPS), employees are required to:
  • Establish/Maintain Chicago Residency - Employees are required to live within the geographic boundaries of the City of Chicago within six months of their CPS hire date and maintain residency throughout their employment with the district. The Chicago residency requirement does not apply to temporary/part-time positions, however, all CPS employees must be residents of Illinois.
  • Be Fully Vaccinated Against COVID-19 - Unless approved for a medical or religious exemption, all employees are required to be up-to-date on COVID-19 vaccinations, including boosters, and to submit proof of vaccination to the district within 30 days of hire. "Up-to-date" on vaccination is defined as being at least two weeks past all primary vaccine doses and any applicable boosters.


Part-Time: 20-30 hrs per week (Maximum of 1200 total hours)

Timeframe: 11 months - Tentative February start date
