Position Summary

This is a part-time, .9375 FTE/7.5 hours per day position working on the CL-192 (192 days per school year) schedule, Mon-Fri, 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.

Due to unprecedented circumstances, the district has temporarily relaxed the requirement that all Educational Assistants demonstrate Highly Qualified (HQ) status upon hire.

As highly qualified status remains a minimum qualification for this role, the hiring manager will work with all successful, non-HQ candidates to achieve highly qualified status through the passage of a rigorous academic assessment of reading, writing, and mathematics skills. Candidates must achieve HQ status prior to the end of their probationary period.




This position is for a 7.5 hour Educational Assistant position for the expansion of the Young Parent Program in 4J. This winter, Eugene School District 4J will be expanding the Young Parent Program with a location at South Eugene High School, working with toddler aged students, ranging from 18-36 months. Native Spanish speaker preferred.

POSITION PURPOSE:
- To assist with instructional activities and the supervision of children.

NATURE AND SCOPE OF RESPONSIBILITIES:
º Work as a classroom team in the instruction of children, with and without disabilities, in a developmentally appropriate toddler environment.
º Provide instruction to support children's development across the five developmental domains (cognition, communication, social-emotional, adaptive and motor).
º Assist in the classroom implementation of Early Childhood Positive Behavior Supports in facilitating the social-emotional development of children.
º Support implementation of an individual education plan for each child through individual and small and large group instruction.
º Assist in maintaining accurate written records, including ongoing assessments, anecdotal observations, and other required forms of data collection to document the progress of all children), including children at risk and children with disabilities.
º Assist in the planning and preparation of the learning environment, setting up and preparing interest areas.
º Assist with meal services and meal reports.
º Perform other tasks such as computer data entry, children's self-care (toilet training or diapering), riding the bus with children (on rare occasions).
º Participate in professional development/training pertaining to child development.
º Assist in the supervision of children in the classroom as well as other settings, such as the cafeteria and/or playground.
º Perform other duties, as assigned


Provides direct physical care of infants and plans daily activities for children attending the District's Day Care Centers. Oversees high school students who are enrolled in work study programs and/or have children in one of the Centers.

Essential Functions:
  1. Conduct lesson plans for children at the Day Care Facility. Prepare needed resources and conduct activities such as daily lessons, songs, stories, games, and art projects.
  2. Administer direct infant care by changing diapers, assisting in using the toilet or washing, and performing related personal care and hygiene tasks. Feed bottles to infants; procure, prepare, serve, and clean-up after daily afternoon snack for older children.
  3. Assign tasks to young parents or student assistants and monitor their interaction with children. Provide guidance in the application of prepared day care programs. Provide role models and examples in parent/child interaction; advise and interact with students and parents in a diplomatic manner. Discuss child behavior problems or special needs.
  4. Discuss child development, program issues, lesson plans, and menus with supervisor. Provide feedback on student assistant performance and complete evaluations as assigned.
  5. Maintain records of child activity, curriculum administration notes, or other records as required.
  6. Perform daily routine cleaning duties for the Center in kitchen, laundry room, bathroom, art areas, activity areas, lockers and library; sanitize and put away toys; lock and secure the facility.
  7. Provide minor first aid, dispute resolution, and quality personal attention for children.
  8. Maintains regular and prompt attendance.
  9. Performs other related duties as assigned.


Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  1. Knowledge of infant and pre-school child development and educational concepts. Ability to make decisions regarding curriculum and discipline.
  2. Ability to work effectively with infants and toddlers for extended periods of time.
  3. Ability plan and implement day care center activities and organize needed resources.
  4. Ability to assign and oversee work of student assistants.
  5. Ability to develop and enforce safety precautions in connection with child activity and student assistant interaction with the children.
  6. Experience differentiating practices for diverse populations.
  7. Ability to work effectively and collaboratively with diverse students, staff, and community populations.

Minimum Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS:
- Preschool Child Development Associate (CDA) credential preferred; or
- Must obtain a CDA within 2 years of date of hire; and
- One-year experience in working with preschool age children
- Valid First Aid/ and Pediatric CPR, must be obtained within 30 days of hire
- Food Handlers card must be obtained within 30 days of hire
- Knowledge of toddler classroom practices and procedures and school operations and personnel.
- Ability to project a pleasant manner and relate well to children and their requests for assistance.
- Flexibility and patience in supervising and instructing children with a variety of skill levels.
- Ability to plan and organize materials for use in instruction.
- Ability to work harmoniously with others and to communicate appropriately and effectively, both orally and in writing, with children, parents, and staff
- Fluent Bilingual Spanish/English skills preferred.

To demonstrate Highly Qualified status as required by ORS 581-037-0005, you will be required to attach documentation to your application to show:
  • Completion of at least two years of post-secondary study consisting of 72 credit hours, 48 semester units (attach transcripts); OR
  • Obtaining an associates or higher degree (attach diploma); OR
  • Meeting a rigorous standard of quality and demonstrating, through a formal state or local academic assessment, knowledge of and the ability to assist in instructing reading, writing and mathematics (attach test scores).
    • Associate degree in Early Childhood development or equivalent experience preferred.
    • Two years of previous experience in direct care activities with pre-school aged children with responsibility to plan activities.
  • Bilingual proficiency and/or multicultural experience strongly preferred.
