Vice President, Content Engineering

WHAT WE SEEK

We are looking for an exceptional VP of Software Engineering to develop a growing team of software engineers focused on creating world class educational software powered by Carnegie Learnings cognitive tutoring technology. The VP, Software Engineering will collaborate with a wide range of staff including experts in cognitive science, user experience design, and instructional design. They will be responsible for managing a team tasked with continually improving Carnegie Learnings ability to create and deliver best-in-class educational content, leveraging modern Artificial Intelligence and compelling interfaces to drive effective student learning outcomes. This role will head up the Content Engineering and Data Services organizations, and include responsibilities for integrating new technologies into our products, ensuring consistent and engaging student learning experiences, and enhancing our capabilities as a data-driven organization.

This position reports directly to the companys CTO.

WHAT YOUR DAY WILL LOOK LIKE
  • Oversee the development of educational software for the K-12 market
  • Lead projects working with cross-functional teams to build and demonstrate innovative educational solutions
  • Supervise the work of multiple software engineering teams focused on our content and data platforms
  • Work with product management, design, and research to define scope and execution plans including short and long-term product roadmaps
  • Develop an effective organization to meet the companys short and long-term goals,
  • Cultivate a pipeline of diverse and high quality talent, retaining and developing high performers, and supplementing with contractors as appropriate
  • Monitor performance of individual contributors and managers, help manage their professional development, and build a culture of software craftsmanship
  • Contribute to architecture and high-level design direction
  • Ensure that product vision and requirements are realized through excellence in execution
  • Steer our data service capabilities; support our transition to a data-driven organization
  • Utilize modern artificial intelligence solutions in support of student outcomes
  • Unify disparate solutions into a cohesive and coordinated development and delivery platform
  • Provide technical leadership to your organization and to the company at large, staying on top of product and technology trends and developments, supporting a technical roadmap and longer-term strategies
  • Collaborate with other engineering teams and functions to achieve organizational and company objectives, aligned with the corporate and technical strategies
  • Manage department finances, budgeting, and forecasting for your organization
  • Evolve the teams operational model, standards & procedures, and KPIs, in collaboration with and in support of other stakeholders
WHAT SHOULD BE IN YOUR BACKPACK
  • 10+ years of experience managing multiple software engineering teams
  • 5+ years of software engineering experience with demonstrated growth of responsibilities and role progression
  • Strong problem solving and troubleshooting skills with the ability to exercise mature judgment
  • Previous leadership roles in product or application development and engineering for high growth companies
  • Experience in Agile development methodologies
  • A proven track record of successful engineering execution in a multi-product, multi-application development environment, delivering value through SaaS products
  • Experience heading up large initiatives with the ability to course-correct as needed
  • Skilled in evaluating technical approaches, balancing cost, complexity, time-to-market, and longevity of potential solutions
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills with technical and non-technical audiences
  • Strong knowledge of technology trends
  • Proven ability to be a change agent in a technical environment coupled with strong business acumen
  • Demonstration of cross-functional collaboration to achieve results
  • Experience managing external vendor relationships
  • Ability to make sound judgements and get things done, even when faced with ambiguity and seemingly conflicting priorities
  • Prior work in the EdTech space is a plus
  • Experience conducting due diligence for M&A activity is a plus
