Position Summary

The Student-Parent Advocate (SPA) will work directly with Atlanta Public Schools (APS) campus administrators, parents, and families to ensure that students' rights are protected and student interests are respected. The SPA will work collaboratively with stakeholders toward ending the school to prison pipeline and maintaining the continued success of APS students. The SPA is responsible for resource referrals and intervention services for the district's most at-risk populations. The incumbent will build positive and productive relationships with students, schools, homes, and communities to aid the student in addressing social, emotional, and behavioral deficits that hinder school success. The SPA will serve as a liaison between school and home for those students who have participated in a discipline process.

Essential Duties
  • Maintains assigned discipline caseload
  • With the oversight of the Coordinator of Student Discipline, develops an effective personal development program that will allow identified students to gain insight into their behaviors and receive targeted support that will serve to reduce the rate of recidivists behaviors and support personal growth
  • Assists the Coordinator of Student Discipline by providing resources, support, and discipline transition services to students and families
  • Works collaboratively with the school's student services personnel to provide support and assistance in aiding students with mental health, behavioral, substance use, personal, or social difficulties
  • Advocates for individual students to promote an environment conducive to personal empowerment and well-being
  • Directly supports students who are going through the disciplinary hearing process and their families
  • Serves as a link to community resources that may be of benefit to at-risk and high-risk youth and their families
  • Coordinates with community partners to build additional resources
  • Meets with students that are enrolling or returning to the district after detainment or incarceration and conducts a case management consultation with the school social work designee
  • Participates in student discipline professional learning opportunities and staff meetings
  • Facilitates social and emotional growth with students
  • Tracks students referred to alternative education after a disciplinary hearing versus those students who are actually enrolled. Provides follow-up and support to parents regarding long-term suspension and expulsion options
  • Collects, tracks, and reports required information on students and services delivered
  • Maintains accurate student records, parent communication records and student progress data/reports as required by district and/or departmental policy
  • Performs other duties as assigned by appropriate administrator
  • Required to attend scheduled shift during regular business hours as mandated

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
  • Thorough knowledge of Federal and State laws and District policies, procedures, and best practices regarding student discipline
  • Knowledge of and the ability to execute effective case management
  • Ability to effectively communicate to a wide variety of people and to provide exemplary customer service
  • Skilled in assessing student needs to foster student success in school
  • Skilled in researching and locating a variety of local community resources, agencies, and/or services that will be beneficial to the student
  • Ability to listen, encourage, and motivate students and families
  • Ability to apply critical thinking skills and provide solutions to problems that have impacted a student's ability to be successful in school
  • Ability to make resource recommendations in a timely, appropriate, and considerate manner
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks, projects, and responsibilities
  • Ability to work collaboratively with other school level, district level, and/or community disciplines to aid students in successfully transitioning through the discipline process and/or between schools as a result of the discipline process


Requirements :

EDUCATION:

Bachelor's degree in Social Work, Counseling, Human Services, or a closely related field required

Master's degree in Social Work, Counseling, Human Services, or a closely related field preferred

CERTIFICATION/LICENSE:

A valid Georgia driver's license and reliable transportation is required

WORK EXPERIENCE:

1 year working with youth and juveniles in a human services function required

1 year of experience working in a school preferred

Mental Requirements: read, write, understand, interpret and apply information at a moderately complex level essential for successful job performance; math skills at a high school proficiency level; judgement and the ability to process information quickly; learn quickly and follow verbal procedures and standards; give verbal instruction; rank tasks in order of importance; copy, compare, compile and coordinate information and records.

Additional Work Conditions & Physical Abilities: Will require travel to multiple sites.
