This posting is for a Temporary Program Assistant-Playground for 5.5 hours per day at Orin Smith Elementary. Position ends 6/16/2023 or the last day of school.

Rate of pay based on experience and the Teamster's salary schedule. See Schedule A. The range for this position follows the Program Assistant pay classification $15.74 (minimum wage) - $20.29.

The Program Assistant/Playground assumes responsibility for the safety and welfare of students during non-classroom activities; communicating observations and incidents that may impact a student's development or general well being to other school personnel; and providing appropriate emergency care as may be necessary.

EXAMPLES of DUTIES:
Essential Job Functions:
  • Administer first aid for the purpose of providing emergency care
  • Assist students during transit to and from school (i.e. crossing streets, bus stops, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring student safety
  • Monitor students before school, during lunch periods and recesses within a variety of school environments, (e.g. rest rooms, playgrounds, hallways, classrooms, library, bus stops, cafeteria, etc.) for the purpose of providing for the safety and welfare of students
  • Report observations and incidents relating to specific students (i.e. discipline, accidents, etc.) for the purpose of communicating information to teachers and administration
  • Implement building and district discipline, management and reward programs while students are under their supervision
Other Job Functions:
  • Administer playground equipment for the purpose of providing equipment necessary for activities
  • Assist other personnel as may be required for the purpose of supporting them in the completion of their work activities
  • Facilitate games among students for the purpose of providing age appropriate activities
  • Perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable accommodation
  • Complete work at assigned workstations
  • Consistently deal with people in a courteous and professional manner
  • Other as assigned
General Job Requirements:

Experience Required: Prior job-related experience paid or volunteer with school age children

Education Required: 18 years of age and a High School diploma or equivalent

Skills, Knowledge and/or Abilities Required:
-Skills to perform basic clerical functions, perform basic arithmetic calculations, operate standard office equipment, including the use of basic computer applications, use English in verbal and written form, use correct grammar, punctuation and spelling. Skills to communicate effectively, problem solve.
-Knowledge of principles of child development, instructional processes, problem solving methodology.
-Abilities to sit for prolonged periods, understand and carry out oral and written instructions, maintain confidentiality of student records, fulfill schedules and meet deadlines, read/interpret/apply rules, regulations, policies, rapidly learn methods and materials used in a variety of instructional situations. Significant physical abilities include reaching/handling, talking/hearing conversations, near/far visual acuity and may include lifting/carrying 25 lbs.

Licenses, Certifications, Bonding, and/or Testing Required:
-Criminal Justice Fingerprint Clearance, Sexual Misconduct Disclosure Form, First Aid/CPR Certification and Hepatitis B Vaccine Series may be required.
-Flagger Certification (willingness to obtain) is required/provided.

Compensation and Benefits:
Temporary positions are not subject to the terms or conditions of the Teamsters Local 252 Bargaining Agreement per Article 1.2.5 Temporary Employee. Temporary positions include health benefits, as described below, and sick leave. It does not include paid holidays or personal days. See Article 7-Leaves and Article 16-Schedule A.
