The City School District of New Rochelle (CSDNR) seeks a gifted and transformational educator to join the District as the Director of Athletics (Director). CSDNR offers a comprehensive interscholastic athletic program for students in Grades 7-12. CSDNR sponsors 80 interscholastic teams between 2 middle schools and one high school. New Rochelle High School has a student enrollment of approximately 3,000 in Grades 9-12 and is considered one of the finest athletic programs in New York State. The Athletic Program at CSDNR has had success at the Section, State and National levels and our students have gone on to play at the collegiate level - some pursuing and attaining careers at the professional level. Our student-athletes excel in the classroom and are also involved in community service and working with the local youth sport programs.

Role:

The Director is directly responsible for reporting to the Superintendent of Schools, supervises and directs the day-to-day operations of the interscholastic athletic program for students in Grades 7-12. The Director serves on CSDNR committees as directed by the Superintendent, assists in planning, development and implementation of Board Policies and Administrative Regulations necessary in directing the interscholastic athletic program.

Duties and Responsibilities:

The Director is responsible for providing leadership and direction for the planning, implementation, and assessment of the operations of the interscholastic athletic program for students in Grades 7-12. Obligations include overseeing, understanding and administering all interscholastic policies and procedures within the confines of CSDNR's policies, Section One rules and regulations established by the New York State Public High School Athletic Association, and the New York State Department of Education. The Director will develop and implement an aligned and coherent district framework for interscholastic athletics to students by preparing the annual budget for the athletic program, supervising a coaching staff of 65 individuals encompassing more than 100 coaching positions, supervising the Athletic Trainer(s) and Strength and Conditioning Coach, working closely with our Guidance Counselor for Student-Athletes, CSDNR's Medical Director, the District's Facilities Department, and serving as a member of CSDNR's Concussion Management Team. The Director ensures the effective operation of all CSDNR interscholastic athletic program functions by developing, managing, and supporting all resources essential to increasing student athletic achievement. This position is accountable for supervising and evaluating all appropriate staff in the interscholastic athletic program.

The job responsibilities of the Director of Athletics include, but are not limited to:

  • Oversees the daily operation of the interscholastic athletic program;

  • Develops game schedules (approx. 800 events/year) for the middle and high school teams;

  • ;

  • Ensures the posting of all schedules and contests for community viewing;

  • Confirms all assignments of game officials;

  • Collaborates with the middle and high school principals and the Assistant Superintendent for Human Resources to make staffing recommendations for the program;

  • Works with the Facilities Department to ensure that fields and gyms are well-maintained and safe for the student-athletes;

  • Supervises the Seasonal Assistant Athletic Directors, a coaching staff of 65 individuals encompassing more than 100 coaching positions, Athletic Trainer(s), middle school Athletic Facilitators, the Strength and Conditioning Coach and the full-time Department Administrative Assistant and assigns duties as necessary:

  • Works with Athletic Trainer(s) on coverage of games and practices;

  • Arranges with Security and Building and Grounds all needs and supervision for games;

  • Coordinates with the Strength and Conditioning Coach the usage of the Fitness Center to enhance all teams:

  • Coordinates with the Athletic Trainer the ImPACT Testing for all athletes each season;

  • Oversees the on-line athlete registration program, Arbiter Sports (formerly FamilyID) by setting up the registration platform for each season and follow-up with Health Services and coaches regarding registrants who have not been approved;

  • Works collaboratively with Health Services Offices at each middle school and high school;

  • Responsible for understanding and administering all interscholastic policies and procedures within the confines of CSDNR's policies, Section One rules and regulations established by the New York State Public High School Athletic Association, and the New York State Department of Education;

  • Serves as a member of the CSDNR's Concussion Management Team;

  • to be certain that those athletes who aspire to the next level of competition are progressing towards NCAA academic eligibility;

  • Works with the Student Assistant Counselor, and My Brother's Keeper Coordinator to be aware of athletes who are at risk and in need of assistance;

  • Presents to Human Resources those coaches who will be appointed to their respective positions. This includes monitoring their progress towards New York State coaching certification;

  • Ensures that First Aid and CPR classes are arranged for coaches prior to each season;

  • Schedules facilities for usage for practices and games;

  • Prepares the agenda and conduct pre-season coaches' meetings;

  • Attends team parent meetings;

  • Works with teams and coaches in preparing special events i.e. Homecoming, Senior Nights, Shoreline Wrestling Tournament, Cheerleading Competition, Cheer Nationals and other special trips;

  • Prepares recognition ceremonies: seasonal awards assemblies, Senior-Athlete Awards Night, signings for the National Letter of Intent. Promote these events with pictures and writing for CSDNR's Communications Department;

  • Works with the newly formed Booster Club to enhance the student-athlete experience;

  • Evaluates the athletic program and makes recommendations for improvements and enhancements;

  • and the equipment list to be sent to vendors for price quotes or bids;

  • Collects the equipment requests from coaches;

  • Arranges for the re-conditioning of all athletic safety equipment and laundering of team uniforms and that all equipment satisfies NOCSAE standards;

  • Works closely with the Purchasing Department to ensure timely processing of Purchase Orders for the ordering of athletic supplies and equipment.

  • Make certain that all contracts that are needed for rental facilities and services are completed including Arbiter Sports, Activate Scheduling, ImPACT, and Hudl;

  • Has a working knowledge of nVision;

  • Represents the Athletic Department at special community events, i.e. New Rochelle Sports Hall of Fame Dinner and Induction Ceremony; Westchester Sports Hall of Fame Dinner;

  • Works with the New Rochelle Department of Recreation and Parks to enhance opportunities for our younger students to participate in youth sports and with the various youth sports programs to coordinate field and gym usage;

  • Attends special school events, local, state, and national conference and be able to share the information with the athletic staff

  • Encourages and provides funding for coaches seeking professional development.

  • Enhances professional development for coaches through pre-season meetings or additional time during the year; and

  • Works with CSDNR's Public Information Office to promote the athletic program and to provide news and updates on team and individual successes and with the high school's Webmasters to make certain that all news and information is up-to date on the Athletic Department's website.


APPLICANT REQUIREMENTS:

Candidates must possess:
  • A minimum of a Master's degree in Education or a closely related field at the time of application.

  • New York State School District Administrator (SDA) or New York State School District Leader (SDL) certificate at the time of application. A minimum of five (5) years of successful experience in a public school setting. (A successful track record in administration, preferably in the area of athletic administration at the high school level is preferred.)
