SUPERVISOR: School Counselor

SUMMARY: Under the direct supervision of a licensed school counselor, provide counseling services to students and parents/guardians. Utilize counseling and consultation techniques to promote student engagement, motivation, and adjustment to school, community, and home environments. Skillfully provide individual counseling to students from all racial, ethnic, and cultural backgrounds.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The following tasks describe the basic functions of the job. The following frequencies and percentage of time spent are approximations only.
  • Provides services to students through consultation, individual and group counseling, and classroom involvement. [Daily, 15%]
  • Assist students in identifying interests, skills, and aptitude and making academic progress consistent with their postgraduate plans. [Daily, 15%]
  • Assist teachers in creating a flexible program and classroom environment that enhances individual growth and in motivating pupils to develop the skills and attitudes that promote the acquisition of knowledge and participation in a democratic society. [Daily, 15%]
  • Provide information and assistance to parents/guardians in their understanding of child development. Establish a working relationship and foster positive rapport with students, parents/guardians, the school community, and other district stakeholders. Provide available community resources to stakeholders as requested. [Daily, 15%]
  • Assist the mental health team with preparation of assessments. [Daily, 5%]
  • Utilize data collection, existing empirical data, current literature, and other resources when designing and implementing programs. [Daily, 5%]
  • Assist students in experiencing a smooth transition between school and home, and between school levels. [Daily, 5%]
  • Support scheduling, registration, and My Career and Academic Plan (MyCAP) implementation. [Daily, 5%]
  • Attend individualized education plan (IEP) meetings as requested. [Daily, 5%]
  • Facilitate problem-solving teams and manage 504 meetings/plans as requested. [Daily, 5%]
  • Help plan and conduct parent-teacher conferences and participate in conferences upon request. [Daily, 5%]
  • Perform other related duties as assigned or requested. [Daily, 5%]

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Working towards a Master's degree in school counseling.
  • Willingness to contribute to cultural diversity for educational enrichment.
  • Basic knowledge of typical office equipment such as telephones, copiers, fax machines, email, etc.
  • Basic knowledge of Microsoft Suite.
  • Basic knowledge of the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) national model.
  • Ability to effectively learn and use common school software.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with and engage in active participation with teachers, teaching assistants and other mental health and general education personnel to provide intervention and consultation regarding the needs of students.
  • Ability to adhere to the professional ethical standards and guidelines developed by the National Association of School Psychology, the American Psychological Association., National Association of Social Workers, and American Counseling Association.
  • Ability to promote and follow the Board of Education policies, District policies, and building and department procedures, protocols, and guidelines.
  • Criminal background check and fingerprinting required for hire.

REQUIRED CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, AND REGISTRATIONS:

All certifications, licenses, and registrations must be valid and unexpired.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • One (1) year of prior professional experience in schools, nonprofits, or community organizations.
  • Experience and knowledge with trauma-informed practices in school settings.
  • Experience working directly with people from diverse racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
  • Racially conscious and culturally competent with the skill, will, capacity, and knowledge to commit to a culture of continuous improvement.
