Located in Bloomfield Hills and situated on almost 40 manicured acres of beautiful rolling hills with two ponds, St. Hugo's is a large suburban parish with an active music program seeking a full-time, highly skilled musician to assist in playing, conducting, and serving as one of the accompanists for the parish Liturgical Choir.

Position Summary :
" The Associate Director of Sacred Music assists the parish Director of Sacred Music in leading the parish music program. Responsibilities include leading or accompanying the congregation and ensembles at liturgies, rehearsing with ensembles, and participation in music selection " ( AOD Parish Job Titles and Descriptions , p11).
" The Associate Director of Sacred Music fosters a full, conscious, and active participation in liturgical celebrations called for by the very nature of the liturgy "
( Constitution on the Liturgy , art. 14).

The Associate Director of Sacred Music provides musical accompaniment for Mass and other liturgical celebrations.

Responsibilities :
  1. The Associate Director of Sacred Music shall assist the Director of Sacred Music in formulating and implementing all goals and objectives in music, in accordance with the decisions of the Pastor, Pastoral Associate, and Director of Worship.
  2. The Associate Director of Sacred Music will be solely responsible for all musical duties normally performed by the Director of Sacred Music on the Director of Sacred Music's regularly scheduled days off, sick, and personal days, and vacation periods.
  3. The Associate Director of Sacred Music will be responsible:
    1. To accompany the singing of hymns, psalms, and Mass Ordinaries at weekend, Holy Days, Christmas, Holy Week, and civil holiday liturgies as assigned by and shared with the Director of Sacred Music.
    2. To perform a suitable organ prelude and postlude at weekend and Holy Day liturgies shared with Director of Sacred Music.
    3. To accompany the singing of hymns, and Mass Ordinaries at daily Mass per week, as assigned by and shared with the Director of Sacred Music, except for Saturday morning.
    4. To assist the Director of Sacred Music in providing music at liturgical services such as Reconciliation, Evening Prayer, Sacrament Preparation, and other celebrations approved by the pastor or his representative.
    5. To provide appropriate music for weddings and funerals, by meeting with family members for these services, as shared with the Director of Sacred Music.
    6. To share responsibility to accompany and conduct the Liturgical Choir at all rehearsals and performances.
    7. To recruit and direct, in consultation with the Director of Sacred Music the Children's Choir.
    8. To practice your craft at the organ and piano.
    9. Help plan music with the Director of Sacred Music.
  4. The Associate Director of Sacred Music will share responsibility with the Director of Sacred Music in coordinating use of the Church and/or Chapel with the Parish Administrative Assistant and be present for all rehearsals and concerts of outside musical groups, and any other group using the Church or Chapel.
  5. Church/Chapel Organ Area:
    1. In collaboration with the Director of Sacred Music, keep choir area and behind the organ always neat and orderly.
    2. Maintain equal distribution of hymnals in the pews seasonally.
  6. Interfaith Thanksgiving Service: To share in representing the parish for the Interfaith Thanksgiving Service with Kirk in the Hills, Temple Beth El, Christ Church Cranbrook, Muslim Unity Center, and provide musical assistance for other ecumenical events when the parish is involved.
  7. Great Lakes Chamber Music Festival: To share in representing St. Hugo Parish to the Great Lakes Chamber Music Festival, to attend social events of the GLCMF Board, and to coordinate all rehearsals and concerts which take place at St. Hugo, as shared with the Director of Sacred Music.
  8. Attend regular meetings of the Staff as determined by pastor.
  9. The Associate Director of Sacred Music will enhance professional growth and development of Music and Liturgy as needed according to the Worship Budget account for staff development.
  10. The Associate Director of Sacred Music will attend programs sponsored by the Archdiocese of Detroit pertaining to music and liturgy.
  11. The Associate Director of Sacred Music shall maintain professional affiliations with professional organizations.
  12. The Director of Sacred Music and the Associate Director of Sacred Music may contract separately for weddings and funerals. Checks are to be made payable to the individual musician.
  13. Keep confidential all information, which is disclosed while serving in your professional role as a religious authority and representative of the church.
  14. Perform other related duties as assigned by the Pastor, Pastoral Associate, and Director of Worship.

Qualifications/Requirements :
  • Bachelor's in Organ
  • Master's degree in Music or Sacred Music.
  • Support the New Evangelization efforts of the parish.
  • Active member of the Roman Catholic Church, who is a person of faith, committed to gospel values, committed to help our parish fulfill the vision and Mission of the parish.
  • Demonstrates deep knowledge of Roman Catholic liturgy and liturgical musical styles and be able to pastorally select music appropriate for the community.
  • Experience in parish ministry.
  • Requires knowledge of liturgy and worship in post-Vatican II practice, and an understanding of the ministerial function of music in the liturgy.
  • Strong relational and communication skills required.
  • Includes evening and weekend responsibilities.
  • Ability to lift a minimum of 35lb.
  • Must complete Protecting God's Children and pass a background check.
