POSITION OVERVIEW:
The Communications Manager, Green New Deal for Boston Public Schools (GND for BPS) is responsible for the strategic development and execution of internal and external communications related to the GND for BPS. The GND for BPS is a joint initiative between Boston Public Schools and the City of Boston to reimagine our schools as full-service community hubs that can adapt to meet the evolving needs of our students and Boston while increasing the climate resilience of BPS facilities. Launched in May 2022, the GND for BPS is a multibillion dollar investment in BPS facilities and the development of a long-term facilities action for the District. The Communications Manager will work closely with BPS and the City of Boston on content development related to the GND for BPS, manage operations communications for both internal and external audiences, and support communication efforts across the district and for the Superintendent. This individual will work closely with the Chief of Communications, the Communications Director, Internal Communications Specialist, Web and Graphics Manager, Multimedia Producer, Press and Deputy Secretaries, and the Mayor's Office communications team. The GND for BPS Communications Manager will report directly to the Chief of Communications.

RESPONSIBILITIES :

Green New Deal for Boston Public Schools Communications
  • Manage the writing and content development of communications related to the GND for both external and internal audiences, including emails, fliers, public presentations, and contributions to print, television, and radio media
  • Collaborate with school-based staff, the Capital Planning team, and the Family & Community Advancement team to engage school communities with communications related to the GND for BPS
  • Enhance leadership's visibility, including highlighting executive editorial content for digital, print, executive and organizational speaking engagements, on efforts related to the GND for BPS
  • Research, capture, interview and articulate stories of the City and BPS' progress of the GND for BPS in a variety of formats, including BPS' website, media outlets, social media, and external reports
  • Work closely with the Chief and Director of Communications and City of Boston communications leadership to ensure appropriate usage and/or creation of BPS content, while maintaining brand style and consistency across all materials
  • Attend Capital Planning meetings to ensure clarity on all project timelines
  • Attend and occasionally staff in-person events with the Superintendent or senior leaders on the GND team to deliver real-time communications updates
District-Wide Communications
  • Collaborate with members of the Communications Department to brainstorm, create, and execute GND for BPS content that aligns with District goals, including announcements, emails, speeches, press releases, and public presentations from the Superintendent and other members of the Executive team.
  • Support internal or external GND communications efforts as needed on a day-to-day basis such as Team meeting support, memo writing, various announcements, and other forms of communication.
  • Be available and responsible for triaging GND for BPS related constituent concerns raised via social media and other media related channels to facilitate response to families, including parents, families, and students, and assuring their inquiries are routed to the correct departments and subject matter experts.
  • Develop key messaging and implement communication strategies relevant to GND for BPS efforts.
  • Serve as spokesperson on behalf of GND for BPS efforts.
  • Brief and advise the Superintendent and other personnel on media appearances and responses related to GND for BPS efforts.
  • Work with the press secretary to identify opportunities for thoughtful, targeted media coverage as part of a larger strategy to reach all relevant audiences, which includes ethnic media sources, related to GND for BPS efforts.
  • Work closely with staff to respond to all GND for BPS focused media inquiries in a timely manner.
  • Provide communications and media training and support to district officials, principals, department heads and other staff related to GND for BPS efforts.
  • Maintain strong relationships with school leaders, department heads and other GND for BPS staff and stakeholders, including visiting schools periodically to develop GND newsworthy story ideas.
  • Oversee the tracking of media coverage and maintenance of up-to-date media contacts lists related to GND for BPS efforts.
  • Work with the Communications leadership, the Mayor's press office, the Public Facilities Department, and other city departments and consultants as appropriate to coordinate GND for BPS messaging and talking points.
  • Actively engage, cultivate and manage relationships with reporters that are focused on covering the GND for BPS
  • Assist in responding to Freedom of Information Act and public records requests.
QUALIFICATIONS - REQUIRED :
  • Hold a Bachelor's Degree in communication, marketing, or a related field;
  • 6+ years of experience working in strategic communications and content management;
  • Excellent writing skills with ability to quickly produce approachable, relevant copy that is reflective of BPS' values, goals, mission, and brand;
  • Strong experience in strategic communications across internal and external communications;
  • Ability to be an effective team member and to contribute proactively to group success whether as an individual contributor or team leader;
  • Ability to independently manage many changing tasks simultaneously;
  • Ability to work effectively with people at all levels across the organization including executive leadership and counterparts across the organization;
  • Strong proactive communication and project management skills and executive presence;
  • Ability to engage, inform, and inspire multiple audiences across varying brands and demographics;
  • Ability to draft, facilitate various rounds of review for, and finalize content that is linguistically reflective of the audiences we serve, and alter writing style as needed;
  • Comfort with process documentation, scheduling, stakeholder management, and project management as needed;
  • Current authorization to work in the United States;
  • Excellent oral, written communication, and presentation skills;
  • Experience with the Microsoft Office Suite and Google platforms; and,
  • A deeply held and unyielding belief in the overarching mission of public education.
QUALIFICATIONS - PREFERRED :
  • Understanding education-specific marketing is a plus.
  • Experience with Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, After Effects, etc.) is a plus.
  • BPS has a strong preference for linguistic diversity, and we believe that candidates who speak another language bring added value to the classroom, school, and district culture and diversity. BPS is particularly interested in candidates who are fluent in one of BPS' official languages: Spanish, Creole (Cape Verdean), Creole (Haitian), Chinese, Vietnamese, Portuguese, & Somali.
  • Familiarity with Boston and Boston Public Schools
  • Familiarity with policies and politics around addressing the climate crisis and understanding of the Green New Deal for Boston Public Schools as a framework for accelerating climate action while advancing economic and racial justice.
