Position Summary: The Juneau School District, located in Alaska's capital city on the lands of the Áak'w K wáan, is seeking an outstanding instructional leader to serve as principal of the Tlingit Culture Language and Literacy Program beginning during the 2023-2024 school year. TCLL houses our K-5 Tlingit Language program serving 72 students with 3 Tlingit Language Teachers, 3 elders, 3 classroom teachers, one special education teacher, and a literacy specialist. The District is seeking an individual who is a strong leader dedicated to increasing student achievement, an instructional leader with a vision for success, and someone who is committed to TCLL successfully expanding into a program serving students in grades K-8.

The successful candidate will be dedicated to achieving academic excellence and lifelong learning, as well as proven leadership abilities; ensures a safe school environment; be committed to parental involvement and school/community partnerships; possess a cultural appreciation for all learners; advocate for students; and be approachable, interactive, present and positive.

Minimum Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in education, or closely-related field.
  • Valid Alaska Administrator's Certificate (Type B) appropriate to Administrator's position at the time Administrator's duties under the contract commence and maintain that certificate while employed pursuant to the contract.
  • Minimum three years of successful teaching experience.
  • Experience working with place-based and culturally regenerative curriculum.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Strong knowledge and background in literacy instruction and dual language instruction
  • Proven leadership skills including staff development and evaluation.
  • Successful experience in serving children of varied ethnic, socioeconomic, and cultural backgrounds.
  • Successful (K-8) teaching experience.
  • Actively promote a safe, violence-free school.
  • Encourage and respect varying teaching models.
  • Committed to a dual-language school concept that includes:
    • Parental involvement and school/community partnerships.
    • Academic excellence for all students and lifelong learning.
    • Broad-based community involvement and inter-agency cooperation.
    • Being an advocate for students, parents and staff of the school community.
    • Engaging families through large program events and develpment of a site council
    • Increasing Tlingit Language Proficiency
    • Willingness to promote Response to Intervention (RTI) practices and concepts.
    • An inclusive special education model.
  • Knowledge of early childhood education.
  • Proven effective interpersonal and communication skills with students, staff, parents, district and community.
  • Knowledge of and commitment to research-based best practices for instruction, curriculum and assessment.
  • Experience working with and providing supervision for district wide programs within a school.
  • Demonstrated experience in and application of education technology in the elementary school.
  • Demonstrated skills as a team builder, mediator and facilitator.
  • Demonstrated experience in successful, equitable, consistent student behavior management and follow through that incorporates SE Traditional Tribal Values
  • Knowledge of special education programs and requirements.
  • Knowledge of and experience with site budgeting process.

Compensation: This is a 210-day contract with a salary range for FY24 of $102,187.00 - $130,909.00 (Range F), on the Juneau School Administrative Association (JSAA) salary schedule. Placement within the salary range is based upon the successful candidate's years of creditable administrative experience requiring an administrative certificate. We offer an excellent benefit package including an employer-sponsored health plan (medical, dental and vision), employer-paid life insurance up to 2.5 times the administrator's salary as well as membership in the Teachers Retirement System (TRS) plan, auto allowance and cell phone allowance. Optional additional benefits are available including: Section 125 Plan and voluntary deferred compensation plan.
