Role Mission:

In the absence of the classroom teacher, the substitute teacher provides instruction, encourages student progress, and manages the learning environment. The substitute teacher position is responsible for always ensuring student safety by supervising scholars with strong classroom management. This position reports directly to the Regional Substitute Teacher Staffing Manager and is managed at the campus level for day-to-day assignments by the administrative assistant, campus principal and instructional lead team.

Expectations:


  • Work a minimum of 2 assignments a week
  • Be on time and complete all assignments
  • If an assignment needs to be canceled to do so 48-hours in advance
  • In an emergency, last-minute cancelation, the substitute is responsible for calling the campus directly and for canceling the assignment in Frontline.

Responsibilities:

1- Demonstrates professional practices in teaching.
  • Follows teacher lesson plans as indicated by administration or absent teacher.
  • Implements a clear and consistent behavior management system that aligns with campus-wide initiatives while developing students' character and sense of community in the classroom.
  • Effective facilitation and personal use of technology as a communication and educational tool to improve student achievement and manage work-related tasks.
  • Helps shape and develop a school-wide culture that fosters a productive and enthusiastic learning environment for each student.
  • Assigns reasonable tasks and homework to students, as indicated by absent teacher or administration.
  • Models correct use of English oral and written language.
  • Supports campus personnel to reach our overall student persistence goals by providing a high-quality parent and student experience.

2- Participates in professional development training and ongoing evaluation reviews.

  • Completes assigned professional development training courses (synchronous or asynchronous) upon hire, and throughout the school year as needed.
  • Engages in ongoing evaluation reviews by campus leaders or teachers whose classroom is covered by the substitute.
  • Receives ongoing coaching and feedback from campus instructional lead team and/or Regional Substitute Staffing Manager for the region, as needed.
  • Is responsive to communication from the Regional Substitute Staffing Manager

3- Follows professional practices and regulations consistent with IDEA systems and policies in working with students, students' records, parents, and colleagues.

  • Conducts assigned classes at the times scheduled.
  • Typical substitute teacher schedule is 7am-4pm
  • Is punctual.
  • Dresses in a manner consistent with school policies.
  • Maintains accurate, complete, and appropriate records and files.
  • Enforces regulations concerning student conduct and discipline.
  • Interacts in a professional manner with students and parents.
  • Maintains student confidentiality.
  • Works cooperatively with all school personnel and parents.

4- Acts in a professional manner.

  • Takes precautions to protect records, equipment, materials, and facilities.
  • Assumes responsibility for supervising students in out-of-class settings.
  • Establishes and maintains a cooperative working relationship with students and families based on trust, understanding, and respect for the communities in which they identify.
  • Performs all other tasks and duties as assigned.

Requirements:
  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited four-year educational institution.
  • Classroom Experience may compensate for education requirements.
  • Able to read, write, speak, and understand the English language.
  • Works cooperatively with all school personnel and Campus Principal.
  • Unwavering belief that a college education is possible for all children, and a commitment to developing a school-wide culture that fosters a productive, enthusiastic learning environment.
  • Openness to observation and critical feedback with a desire to continuously learn and increase effectiveness as a teacher.

Compensation:
  • Compensation for this role is $110 per day for degreed subs. $75 per day for non-degreed substitute teachers. An increase in pay occurs when substitute works for long-term assignments (+10 consecutive days on the same job) $160 per day.
