Overview

The ENL (English as a New Language) teacher intern will bolster our ELL (English Language Learner) student support program and assist in the development of skilled teachers to close the gap in academic outcomes that our ELL students and families experience. Working collaboratively with the schools teams, the ENL teacher intern engages in a rich and cultivating translation support during in class instruction. This position offers an extraordinary opportunity to apply highly-developed strategies and systems in classroom support, family engagement, and teacher development.

The ideal candidate can work independently and has the drive to thrive in a results-focused, fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment. In addition, they have experience in process-building, planning and execution, working under tight deadlines, and navigating systems and organizations of scale and complexity without sacrificing thoroughness. This is a pathway to receiving a full-time ENL teacher offer at the end of the 2022-23 school year for the upcoming 2023-24 school year should evaluations and TESOL certification allow.

Responsibilities

  • Provide in classroom support that encompasses ELL student comprehension/translation support and utilizing data to inform ELL student support provided by ENL teacher
  • Alongside teachers, maintain family engagement and communication on student progress and foster a sense of community for families
  • Work with ENL teacher to inform professional development and coaching, plus support development of tools and resources to collaborate with teachers in better assisting ELL students

Qualifications

  • College graduate or expected graduate in spring 2023 (bachelor's degree)

  • Commitment to teaching students in underserved areas and the drive to combat the systemic inequities in America's schools
  • Strong track-record of academic achievement and extracurricular leadership
  • Relentless pursuit of and track-record of setting and achieving ambitious goals
  • Strong collaboration and communication skills
  • Strong organization and time management
  • Ability to quickly implement feedback to improve practice

Preferred qualifications:
  • Deep passion for the importance of ENL education and a particular academic discipline
  • Have taken or is taking ENL teaching related courses
  • On track to receive TESOL certification

Compensation

Compensation for this part-time role is $22 / hour for a maximum of 20 hours a week until the end of the 2022-23 school year. Compensation is determined using an equitable compensation scale that accounts for years of experience and levels of attained education.

Staff and Reporting Relationships

The ENL teacher intern reports to the assistant principal. They also receive direction from and work closely with their co-teacher.
