TITLE: TEACHER - ELEMENTARY MULTILINGUAL LEARNER (ML) SPECIALIST

CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: Valid Teaching Certificate, State of Washington, with proper endorsement(s) in assigned area(s)

RESPONSIBILITIES :
  • Develops and integrates a program of study that enhances the listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills for ML students.
  • Provides leadership in developing and enhancing culturally responsive classroom approaches.
  • Designs lessons and learning plans specific to student's level of English proficiency and academic needs.
  • Effectively instructs and manages ML students in grades K-5 for the purpose of improving their language skills and overall academic success through supportive mainstream, push-in/pull-out small group or individual support.
  • Directs ML paraeducators for the purpose of providing an effective language program that addresses the individual language and academic requirements of ML students.
  • Provides staff training in the area of Multilingual learning supports and strategies.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and sensitivity to the cultural heritage and self-esteem of all students.
  • Ability to work in a team environment with staff (team teaching in teachers' classrooms, small group instruction and cross-age facilitation) to ensure the successful and immediate integration of limited English proficiency students into the general education classroom.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of a variety of instructional materials and techniques and integrates these into the general education classroom and provides support to general education teachers.
  • Collaborates with the ML Coordinator to organize, schedule, and oversee state and federally required testing.
  • Develops and maintains lines of communication with students, staff, and parents regarding the attendance, academic and behavioral progress of students.
  • Meets with and provides outreach to families of ML students.
  • Participates in needed professional development and department meetings.
  • Must be able to perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Other duties as assigned.
DESIRED BACKGROUND/SKILLS :
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Knowledge of and/or experience related to state-mandated testing and assessments.
  • Ability to use technology as a tool for communication, instruction, data collection and analysis, and progress monitoring documentation.
  • Awareness of community resources that support families.
  • Knowledge in the following school-wide areas:
    • Social-emotional, cultural heritages and academic needs of students.
    • Multi-tiered Systems of Support to include Universal Design for Learning.
    • Use and implementation of instructional materials in grades K-5.
RESPONSIBLE TO and EVALUATION BY : District Office Administrator

SCHEDULE : Regular district calendar - exclusive of voluntary staff orientation program prior to starting date

SALARY : Tumwater School District Teachers' Salary Schedule
