Job Summary: Provide diagnosis and remediation of speech and language for students.

Essential Functions:
  • Implements screening and/or referral procedures to identify students needing speech-language evaluation which will include:
  • Screening all students who are new to the division (all kindergarteners and new students coming in throughout the year), all preschool children referred within the division and all those referred from private schools.
  • Referring students whose speech problems may have an organic cause, to one or more physicians before enrolling them in therapy.
  • Processes evaluation information which will include:
  • Obtaining diagnostic information through formalized testing.
  • Gathering information from teachers and parents to assist in assessing specific student problems.
  • Developing long-range goals for student's individualized education program (IEP).
  • Developing short-term goals for student's individualized education program (IEP).
  • Implements an appropriate therapy plan based on written objectives which will include:
  • Scheduling and grouping students according to the nature and severity of their communication disorders.
  • Implementing therapy activities in a logical sequence.
  • Using materials compatible with student's age and interest (this includes purchasing and maintaining materials within each school).
  • Manages programs and maintains records which will include:
  • Informing staff of program services.
  • Conferring with parents and teachers of students enrolled in therapy.
  • Maintaining ongoing records of student's performance in order to evaluate student's progress in therapy.
  • Conducting annual review and updating short-term objectives.
  • Serves as a resource person which will include:
  • Providing in-service education to teachers and school staff members on topics concerning speech improvement.
  • Assisting in proper referrals of individuals to agencies and specialists in the community as appropriate.
  • Assisting in the inclusion of students with disabilities in the regular classroom.
  • Complies with program guidelines from the Virginia Department of Education.
  • Supervises speech assistant(s).
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the principal or designee.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
  • Prior to beginning employment, applicant should hold a Board of Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology issued license as a Speech-Language Pathologist or School Speech-Language Pathologist. A provisional license will be accepted.
  • Candidate must be a graduate of an accredited college or university.
  • Applicant who has had teaching experience must have an acceptable rating for such teaching

Salary: This is a 10 month position with a starting salary $53,414.00 (Master's degree); additional stipend of $2,890 annually. Additional compensation awarded for credits earned toward advanced degrees. New employees to Spotsylvania County will be compensated for up to 20 years of experience.
