Title of Position: School Nurse

Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree (BA or BS) preferred and a RN license
  • Has successfully served as a school nurse or has completed training in this specific field preferred
  • Must qualify for and maintain a valid Washington driver's license and RN license
  • Has the ability to effectively plan, organize, conduct and supervise work assignments and to work collaboratively with administration and staff
General Description of Duties:
  • Plans school health program in cooperation with medical authority and administrative services school personnel.
  • Participates in evaluation of medical records and reviews findings to evaluate health status of pupils and progress of program.
  • Instructs classes in subjects such as human growth and development, first aid and establishes nursing practices to meet emergencies.
  • Cooperates with school personnel in identifying and meeting social, emotional, and physical needs of school children.
  • May administer immunizations, provides first-aid along with a broad range of nurse services and maintains health records of students.
  • Trains staff in the administration of medications for students.
  • Counsels students in good health habits/personal hygiene.
  • Performs/trains others in health screenings required by statute or administrative code.
  • Works with community agencies in planning services to meet needs of children outside the school environment.
  • Assists in program for care of disabled children.
  • Provide blood borne pathogen instruction for new staff and administration of Hepatitis B vaccine to those staff members who wish to be vaccinated.
  • Instructs AIDS/HIV classes for all fifth and sixth grade students in the district.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Essential Functions:

The School Nurse must:
  • Be capable of working extended hours.
  • Be capable of being mobile to move throughout the school facility and grounds for an estimated four to seven hours daily.
  • Be capable of sitting for at least one to two hours at a time while attending meetings, seminars, daily job duties and other related scheduled activities. May have the availability to alternate sitting and standing activities.
  • Be capable of communicating both verbally and in written form.
  • Have adequate hearing and visual acuity to communicate with students, parents, administrators, community representatives and staff without difficulty.
  • Have the ability to constantly lift and carry objects weighing 0-10 pounds, 11-24 pounds occasionally, and 25-50 pounds or more on a rare basis. May be required to lift students in an emergency situation rarely. Most lifting is comprised of books, supplies, AV equipment and computer technology.
  • Be able to make judgments and decisions quickly and accurately on-the-spot.
  • Perform a variety of duties and multiple tasks without hesitation when dealing with the safety of students.
  • Adaptability to performing under stress when confronted with emergency, critical and unusual situations.
  • Ability to work under stress or tension as a frequent, consistent part of the job.

Occasionally: activity or condition exists up to 1/3 of the time.

Frequently: activity or condition exists from 1/3 - 2/3 of the time.

Constantly: activity or condition exists from 2/3 or more of the time.

The School Nurse is exposed to hot, cold, dust and climatic temperature changes for short period of time as a result of seasonal climatic conditions and due to site visitations of educational activities at schools. Must be capable of performing work duties outside for short periods of time. Noise level would be considered moderate for short duration.

Ability to respond to inquiries or complaints and to effectively present information. Possess visual acuity to perform job tasks with clarity of vision at 20 inches or less and 20 feet or more. Defective visual acuity may adversely affect job performance and/or the safety of others. Hearing capability to perceive the nature of sounds in order to communicate with a variety of individuals. Ability to perform
variety of detailed work tasks at a fast pace using common sense and make on-the-spot decisions quickly and accurately.
