POSITION SUMMARY
Assist with the transporting of students, including special needs students, with responsibilities to include assisting with loading and unloading students, along with ensuring students' adherence to safety rules.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Clocks in at scheduled duty time.
- Is on the bus before the assigned bus's departure.
- Rides only on the assigned bus unless directed otherwise by a Dispatcher.
- Sits in a seat on the bus that facilitates student observation and management, generally at the rear of the bus or in the seat behind the last one occupied by students.
- Assists the bus driver, parents and school personnel in loading and unloading students at bus stops and school centers, as necessary and as directed. The Bus Aide must assist all pre-school and physically impaired students up and
down the stairwell. - Checks the operation of the wheelchair lift before departing the compound each morning and afternoon, and reviews the wheelchair securing points and occupant restraints for needed quantities and proper functioning.
- Assists the bus driver and students in following the school bus rules and procedures.
- Keeps an updated seating chart with each student's name, address, and telephone number on the bus at all times, and ensures each student transported.
- Assures that all seat belts, wheelchair securing points, and occupant restraints are put away or locked in the seats when not in use to avoid safety hazards.
- Alert to student passenger needs at all times, getting up to assist student en-route when necessary, providing directions to students, and maintaining order.
- Unless attending to a student's needs, the Bus Aide shall remain seated at the rear of the bus when the bus is in motion.
- Should keep a record of any bruises or cuts sustained by students both on or off the bus, and report such immediately to Coordinators or school personnel.
- Submits misconduct information to building administrator at a school/center. Conferences with a student's parents/guardians and school staff are encouraged regarding a student's behavior.
- Performs other relevant duties as required, such as: securing wheelchairs, securing students in their occupant restraints, cleaning up students, helping the driver clean up the bus, putting windows up and down, safely securing carry-on items, securing wheelchair trays, and assisting the driver in performing the {Pre-Trip and Post-Trip Inspections).
- Should be thoroughly familiar with the assigned routes, runs, bus stops, students' names, students' exceptionalities, and shall provide assistance to substitute bus drivers if the regular driver is absent.
- Familiar with and able to perform in accordance with the School Bus Operators and Bus Attendants Handbook.
- Maintain order among pupils during trips, in order to ensure safety.
- Assist with the pick-up and drop off students at regularly scheduled neighborhood locations, following strict time schedules.
- Maintain knowledge of first-aid procedures.
- Other duties as assigned by the Director of Transportation.
