Job Title: Explore- Sign Language Interpreter

Department: Special Education

Pay Grade: O251 *Subject to change pending salary schedule approval.

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Reports to: Special Services

Training Days: June 1 & 2

Contact Days: June 5-30 & July 10-21

*All seated teachers and support staff are required to work an additional 30 minutes beyond the instructional day to assist in supervising during arrival/dismissal. This site principal will decide and communicate whether the 30 minutes will be tacked on before or after (or split between) the instructional day.

GENERAL PURPOSE

This position is responsible for providing support to the instructional program with specific responsibility for assisting students in reaching targeted behavior goals and social competencies; assisting in the instruction of individual or small groups of students in a variety of subject areas; and monitoring and reporting student behavior and performance.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Adapts language to clarify classroom work under the direction of the teacher for the purpose of providing a method to support and/or reinforce lesson plans to assigned students.

Interprets subject specific tests and skill assessments under the guidance of a classroom teacher or resource teacher for the purpose of evaluating students' language ability and subject.

Assesses classroom, assembly hall, and other room setups for students identified as hearing impaired/deaf (e.g. noise level, visibility) for the purpose of ensuring proper setup to facilitate students' learning.

Attends Individual Education Program meetings with assigned student(s) for the purpose of providing necessary input into the evaluation of students' progress and/or implementing/modifying students' objectives through the conversion of conversation to sign.

Conducts, and participates in, in-service meetings for the purpose of conveying information and upgrading classroom skills necessary for the successful educational process for students identified as hearing impaired/deaf.

Provides reinforcement of lesson objectives to students (individual or small groups) (e.g. reading, spelling, self-esteem, behavioral skills, daily living skills) for the purpose of implementing goals for remediation of student deficiencies (removed: and ensuring students success) by the conversion of voice to sign.

Interprets in meetings and activities with students and other individuals who are deaf/hard of hearing for the purpose of providing content understanding and communication between voice to sign and sign to voice.

Maintains a variety of confidential and non-confidential manual and electronic lists and records for the purpose of documenting activities and/or providing reliable information.

Monitors student activities in the educational environment under the supervision of certified personnel for the purpose of providing a safe and positive learning environment.

Provides teachers with input for the purpose of assisting in evaluating student progress and/or student objectives.

Interprets to students identified as hearing impaired/deaf, under the supervision of the teacher, in accordance with lesson plans (e.g. reading, spelling, self-esteem, behavioral skills, daily living skills, ) for the purpose of supporting student comprehension and assisting the teacher in improving students' academic success through a defined course of study.

Uses adapted classroom work/homework/assessment instruments under the direction of the teacher for the purpose of providing voice to sign and sign to voice support and/or supporting learning.

Performs other related duties, as assigned, for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.

QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS

Education and Experience

Targeted, job related education with study in job-related area, required

Certificates, Licenses and Other Special Requirements

Missouri Interpreter's License, required

Missouri Certification, or Restricted Certification in Education (RCED) through Missouri Commission for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (MCDHH), required

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of basic math, including calculations using fractions, percents, and/or ratios; read a variety of manuals, write documents following prescribed formats, and/or present information to others; and analyze situations to define issues and draw conclusions.

Knowledge based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: child guidance principles and practices, especially as they relate to students with learning disabilities; instructional materials and techniques used in Special Education; safe practices in classroom and other activities; correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation and vocabulary; reading and writing communication skills; and record keeping techniques.

Skill to perform multiple, technical tasks with a need to routinely upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions.

Skill based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job, including: operating standard office equipment including using pertinent software applications; and preparing and maintaining accurate records.

Ability to read technical information and compose a variety of documents.

Ability to analyze situations to define issues and draw conclusions.

Ability to work with others under a wide variety of circumstances; working with data utilizing defined but different processes; and operate equipment using defined methods.

Ability to work with a significant diversity of individuals and/or groups; work with data of widely varied types and/or purposes; and utilize job-related equipment.

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements

Work environment is primarily inside, where the noise and temperature levels are moderate.

The work is requires exerting up to 50 pounds of force frequently and/or the ability to push/pull/carry multiple times daily.

Must possess the physical ability to work primarily with fingers, perceive the nature of sounds, make rational decisions through sound logic and deductive processes, express or exchange ideas by the spoken word, substantial movements (motions) with the hands, wrists, and/or fingers, and discern letters or numbers at a given distance.

Additionally, the following physical abilities are required: balancing, crouching, feeling, grasping, handling, hearing, kneeling, manual dexterity, mental acuity, reaching, repetitive motion, speaking, standing, stooping, talking, visual acuity, and walking.
