Supervised by and/or Reports to: Building Administrator

General Responsibilities: Provide safety and security services for all students and staff; analyze situations and take quick, effective, and reasonable action.

Essential Duties:

  • Serves as the first impression of the school, answers questions, directs visitors, and helps people navigate throughout the school.
  • Establishes a good rapport with staff and community members through informal daily interactions.
  • Builds positive and professional relationships with students and leverages those relationships to establish and maintain productive and safe learning environments and common areas of the building.
  • Demonstrates dignity and respect when interacting with students at all times.
  • Utilizes the Raptor System to check in and out all non-school personnel and volunteers, sign-in students, facilitate background checks, run reports, and track visitor movement/activity.
  • Leads efforts to identify and de-escalate inappropriate student behaviors and assists students with maximizing their time on task in the classrooms.
  • Serves as an emergency response leader during crisis situations including fire, tornado, and active shooter incidents.
  • Patrols (by foot or mobile) and monitors assigned areas of the school buildings, grounds, and parking lots to deter, detect, and report unauthorized persons, stop violations of the law and/or school board policies or unsafe conditions and redirect or escort people from the property.
  • Collaborates with other school and district personnel, assigned police officer, representatives of local agencies for the purpose of sharing and gaining information.
  • Stays current with community-related problems that may impact the school.
  • Assists administrators and staff in crisis and emergency situations such as fire drills and emergency building evacuations.
  • Maintains security records, logs, and reports as required.
  • Administers the assignment of parking spaces, monitors the parking lot, directs traffic, and issues parking tickets.
  • Supervises and directs student movement.
  • Intervenes and diffuses conflict situations in common areas and classrooms.
  • Participates in conflict mediation training sessions and acts as mediator when necessary.
  • Operates and maintains the building camera system, utilizing it for investigations.
  • Investigates lost or stolen personal and school items.
  • Conducts searches when requested to do so by the school administration.
  • Assists the administration with student searches; determines the status of unaccounted students.
  • Works with school administrators and law enforcement officials in handling serious student offenses and law violations.
  • Attends student conferences as requested by administration.
  • Assists with students experiencing tardy/attendance issues as needed.
  • Monitors all assemblies.
  • Participates in daily bus duty.
  • Escorts students to and from classrooms and offices as needed.
  • Attends support staff meetings as required.
  • Monitors standardized testing as needed.
  • Mentors students informally at the request of administration and parents.
  • Assists with crowd control.
  • Maintains, updates, and communicates the "no trespass" list for both students and community members.
  • Provides assistance to special needs students during emergencies and drills.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.


Requisite Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Strong customer service skills, able to set a positive tone.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to take direction and plan actions adherent to directions.
  • Ability to monitor/supervise students in unstructured situations.
  • Exhibits excellent decision making and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to deal courteously and fairly with the general public, school staff, and students.
  • Ability to supervise other staff members.
  • Serve as role model.


Requisite Education and Experience:

  • Must possess a high school diploma or equivalent (GED)
  • Must conform to all requirements pursuant to the Code of Virginia and the Virginia Administrative Code for certification.
  • Secures and maintains basic first aid, CPR, and Automated External Defibrillator certification.
  • Within a reasonable amount of time after coming into the position, must receive the School Security Officer Certification through the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services and maintain certification by completing 16 hours of related in-service training every two (2) years.


Physical Requirements:

Must have the use of sensory skills in order to effectively communicate and interact with other employees and the public through the use of the telephone and personal contact as normally defined by the ability to see, read, talk, hear, handle or feel objects and controls. Physical capability to effectively use and operate various items of office related equipment, such as, but not limited to: a personal computer, calculator, copier, and fax machine. Significant climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, or repetitive motions required.
