Educational Assistant, Bilingual (Preschool Promise) - Buena Vista Spanish Immersion Elementary

Position Summary

This a part-time 0.6875 FTE/5.5 hours per day position working on a CL-192 work schedule

Due to unprecedented circumstances, the district has temporarily relaxed the requirement that all Educational Assistants demonstrate Highly Qualified (HQ) status upon hire.

As highly qualified status remains a minimum qualification for this role, the hiring manager will work with all successful, non-HQ candidates to achieve highly qualified status through the passage of a rigorous academic assessment of reading, writing, and mathematics skills. Candidates must achieve HQ status prior to the end of their probationary period.

  1. Performs duties of bilingual instructional assistance to the teacher as well as a variety of clerical tasks in support of and preparation for the educational process.
  2. The position facilitates the smooth operation of the educational program in one or more classes by attending to details which free the teacher to develop a comprehensive lesson schedule. Aids in preserving the unity of classroom advancement by tutoring students who have difficulty comprehending or who are in need of emphasis on specific aspects of the instructional program.
Essential Functions:
  1. Confer with teacher and assist in preparation of lessons appropriate to level of instruction; review coverage and comprehension of subject matter and administer tests.
  2. Tutor on a one-to-one basis as necessary; assign extra work for quick learners and assist in remediation and completion of assignments by slow-learning students.
  3. Monitor and supervise students engaged in activities initiated by the teacher. Record student and behavior.
  4. Translate standardized District 4J instructional materials from English to French, Spanish or another language.
  5. Compose and format homework assignments, charts, posters, memos, newsletters and other items as requested by the teacher.
  6. Prepare, disseminate, collect, process and store or redistribute instructional materials used in class.
  7. Prepare classroom materials using current office technology and equipment (e.g., computer systems, fax, copiers, etc.) and production equipment (e.g., thermofax, punching and binding machine, laminator).
  8. Collect, sort and correct lessons and tests; record grades in ledger; redistribute as necessary; file classroom materials.
  9. Receive and respond to parental inquiries regarding student, program, school, teacher or classroom activities.
  10. Supervise lunchroom, classroom, hallways, and recess yards so that an orderly atmosphere is preserved; control aggressive behavior, settle disputes and otherwise manage student behavior and activity.
  11. Maintain an inventory of supplies for teachers and staff; complete purchase orders for additional materials and stock shelves with new supplies.
  12. Administer first aid to minor bumps, scrapes and bruises of students when minor accidents occur.
  13. Maintains regular and prompt attendance.
  14. Performs other related duties as assigned.


Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  1. Ability to work with or lead students in group or individual activities.
  2. Instructional or behavioral management skills.
  3. Ability to use current office technology and equipment (e.g., computer systems, fax, copiers, etc.)
  4. Ability to use or learn to use computers and word processing software.
  5. Ability to communicate beyond the level of instruction using a foreign language both orally and in writing.
  6. Experience differentiating practices for diverse populations.
  7. Ability to work effectively and collaboratively with diverse students, staff, and community populations.

Minimum Qualifications

To demonstrate Highly Qualified status as required by ORS 581-037-0005, you will be required to attach documentation to your application to show:
  • Completion of at least two years of post-secondary study consisting of 72 credit hours, 48 semester units (attach transcripts); OR
  • Obtaining an associates or higher degree (attach diploma); OR
  • Meeting a rigorous standard of quality and demonstrating, through a formal state or local academic assessment, knowledge of and the ability to assist in instructing reading, writing and mathematics (attach test scores).
  • Fluent speaking and reading ability in a foreign language.
  • Bilingual proficiency and/or multicultural experience strongly preferred.

This position is for a 5 hour Bilingual Educational Assistant for the expansion of the Preschool Program in 4J.

This fall, the District will be expanding the Preschool Promise Program with a location at Buena Vista Spanish Immersion School, working with preschool students, ages

- Fluent Bilingual Spanish/English skills required
- Native Spanish speaking preferred.

POSITION PURPOSE

- To assist teachers in instructional activities and working with children.

NATURE AND SCOPE OF RESPONSIBILITIES

º Assist the classroom team in the instruction of children, with and without disabilities, in a developmentally appropriate preschool environment
º Provide instruction to support children's development across the five developmental domains (cognition, communication, social-emotional, adaptive and motor).
º Assist in the classroom implementation of Early Childhood Positive Behavior Supports in facilitating the social-emotional development of children.
º Support implementation of an individual education plan for each child through individual and small and large group instruction.
º Assist the teacher in maintaining accurate written records, including ongoing assessments, anecdotal observations, and other required forms of data collection to document the progress of all children), including children at risk and children with disabilities
º Assist the teacher in planning and preparation of the learning environment, setting up interest areas, and preparing
º Assist with meal services and meal reports
º Perform other tasks to assist the teacher such as computer data entry, children's self-care (toilet training or diapering), riding the bus with children (on rare occasions).
º Participate in professional development/training (minimum of 20 clock hours per year, 8 pertaining to child development).
º Assist in the supervision of children in the classroom as well as other settings, such as the cafeteria and/or playground
º Perform other duties, as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS

- Fluent Bilingual Spanish/English skills required
- Native Spanish speaking preferred

- Step 3 or higher in the Oregon Registry and one of the following:
- Preschool Child Development Associate (CDA) credential preferred; or
- Must obtain a CDA within 2 years of date of hire; and
- One-year experience in working with preschool age children
- Valid First Aid/ and Pediatric CPR, must be obtained within 30 days of hire
- Must be enrolled in the Oregon Central Background Registry prior to beginning employment and enrollment must be maintained throughout employment.
- Food Handlers card must be obtained within 30 days of hire
- Knowledge of preschool classroom practices and procedures and school operations and personnel
- Ability to project a pleasant manner and relate well to children and their requests for assistance
- Flexibility and patience in supervising and instructing children with a variety of skill levels
- Ability to plan and organize materials for use in instruction
- Ability to work harmoniously with others and to communicate appropriately and effectively, both orally and in writing, with children, parents, and staff
- Fluent Bilingual Spanish/English skills required

ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Moderate degree of physical stamina, with frequent lifting of up to 10 pounds and occasional lifting of up to 50 pounds required in the physical assistance of children. Ability to move freely to various locations within the classroom and other supervisory settings (cafeteria/playground). Frequent standing, walking, sitting, and bending. Exposure to noise and activity of a school setting. Exposure to outdoor weather conditions.
