SUMMARY DESCRIPTION

Under general supervision, performs various specialized custodial responsibilities throughout WCSD, including emergency response clean-ups (water, sewer, petroleum, etc.), hazardous material incident response, viral/bacterial outbreak response, process cleaning training, impact cleaning at schools/sites, screening and applying gym finish to district gyms, carpet extraction, carpet repair, minor maintenance repairs, and grounds and painting duties. Keeps assigned building area clean, sanitary, safe, and orderly; secures rooms and cleaning stations. Performs minor building and/or equipment moves. May work as a substitute custodian and as an acting Site Facility Coordinator and Lead Custodian. Trains/Evaluates and retrains new employees and custodians in Process Cleaning for Health. Incumbent performs related duties as required.

Positions may be assigned to early morning, morning, afternoon, evening or night shifts on a frequent as needed basis.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

The Utility Crew Custodian II classification differs from the standard Custodian classification in that the former trains and evaluates new hire custodians in Process Cleaning for Health. Retrains district sites and their custodial staff in Process Cleaning for Health. Performs a number of regulated EPA and OSHA tasks, including emergency response clean-ups, and gym floor screening and finish application. Inventory/Update chemical SDS sheets for site and shop needs. Also, performs a number of other more complex and technical duties and tasks on a daily basis, not required of the Custodian classification.

EXEMPLARY DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

Performs specialized custodial responsibilities; supervises work of custodial new hire trainees; inspects trainees work for conformance to standards; orients, trains and evaluates trainees; recommends trainee personnel actions such as satisfactory completion of Process Cleaning for Health training.

Maintains operational, training records and reports; inventories and maintains specialized utility crew custodial supplies and equipment; repairs and maintains specialized equipment for gyms, emergency response, etc.

Provides Process Cleaning for Health training to Site Facility Coordinators, Lead Custodians, and Custodians.

Sweeps, mops, scrubs, shampoos, and waxes floors, including surfaces of many types; vacuums, repairs, steam clean rugs and carpets; dusts, waxes, washes and polishes furniture and woodwork, fixtures, shelves, cupboards, and counters; cleans walls, desks, tables, blackboards, whiteboards; deep clean and sanitize restrooms, locker rooms, and showers; fills soap and paper dispensers; washes windows, empties trash and waste cans, restocks supplies and performs other custodial tasks and duties as assigned.

Must be respirator fit tested for job requirements. Required to maintain and wear proper personal protective equipment for emergency response events.

Move and assemble furniture and equipment. May help set up rooms and auditoriums for special meetings and activities. May set up and open areas for special events. Perform minor maintenance such as replacing lights, painting small rooms or trim, removing and/or tagging broken furniture, removing carpet, tile, cabinetry, reporting vandalism and items needing repair. May perform some outside maintenance, such as snow removal, mowing, weeding, irrigating, picking up litter, etc. Insures all doors and windows in assigned area are locked, alarms set and necessary security lights are on.

May work as a substitute custodian and as an acting Site Facility Coordinator and Lead Custodian. Performs related duties as required.

Participates in intensive cleaning and restoration of District buildings during summer vacations and other periods; screens and applies gym finish to all district gym floors; assists Capitol Projects with revitalization and construction remodel projects; paints interior and exterior walls; strips floors using power equipment; and seals and waxes floors.

May be called upon on off-hours for district-wide emergencies, such as burglaries, vandalism, fires, snow removal, equipment failures, flooding, viral/bacterial outbreak response, etc.

EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS

Education/Experience: Any combination equivalent to education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and skills is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and skills would be:
  1. One (1) to two (2) years of experience demonstrating reliability, responsibility and good work habits in custodial work or an equivalent combination of maintenance training and experience.

Knowledge of: Reading, writing and basic arithmetic sufficient to perform job duties successfully; and cleaning materials, methods and equipment.

Skill at: Understanding and carrying out verbal and written instructions; learning supplies, equipment, and prescribed methods of cleaning; performing strenuous physical work; working effectively under time limitations and without immediate supervision; working under occasional adverse environmental situations such as heat, cold, dust and fumes; climbing and working from ladders; working in high spaces on scissor lifts and lifts; making simple arithmetic calculations; and developing working relationships with those contacted in course or work; training new hires and retraining staff in a one-on-one environment.

Licenses/Certificates: Possession of a valid Nevada State Operator's license with a driving record acceptable to the District. Ability to drive a WCSD vehicle.

Special Requirements: Applicants will be required to pass a physical and a full-mask or half-mask respirator fit test. Under this requirement the employee may not be able to have certain facial hair, like a beard, long sideburns, or mustache that may interfere with the passing of the fit test.

Physical Demands: The work requires some physical exertion, such as long periods of standing; walking over rough, uneven, or rocky surfaces; recurring bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, reaching, or similar activities; or recurring lifting of moderately heavy items, such as typewriters and record boxes. The work may require specific, but common, physical characteristics and abilities, such as above average ability and dexterity.

Work Environment: The work involves moderate risks or discomforts that require special safety precautions, e.g., working around moving parts, carts, or machines; exposure to contagious diseases or irritant chemicals. Employees may be required to use protective clothing or gear, such as masks, gowns, coats, boots, goggles, gloves, or shields.

Salaries are subject to adjustment and may increase and decrease each fiscal year. New employees hired by Washoe County School District are normally placed on the entry step (step one) of the grade of the position.

This is a 40 hour per week, 260 day position.

Eligible employees who are regularly scheduled to work less than 20 hours per week receive Social Security benefits, and the Salary Increases, Longevity Bonuses, and Credit Union benefits; eligible employees who are regularly scheduled to work 20 to 24.75 hours per week received PERS retirement benefits, and the Salary Increases, Longevity Bonuses and Credit Union benefits listed below; eligible employees who are regularly scheduled to work 25 to 27.25 hours per week receive the benefits listed below, with the exception of Medical, Dental, Vision Insurance; eligible employees who are regularly scheduled to work 27.5 hours per week or more receive full benefits of the District.
Holiday: Eligible employees receive up to eleven (11) paid holidays each year. Vacation: Eligible employees receive up to twenty (20) days of paid vacation each year. Sick Leave: Eligible employees receive up to fifteen (15) days of paid sick leave each year. Medical, Dental, Vision Insurance: Eligible employees may select an insurance plan wherein WCSD contributes 100% of insurance premiums. Eligible employee paid dependent medical insurance is available for an employee's dependents. Insurance Premiums - Summer Months: WCSD contributes 100% of the district paid portion of eligible employee's insurance premiums for employees who are not scheduled to work in the summer. Life Insurance: The District contributes 100 % of employee's life insurance premiums. Salary Increases: In addition to any negotiated increases each year, eligible employees receive salary increases each July, for the first fifteen (15) years of employment. Longevity Bonuses: Eligible employees receive annual bonuses as follows: 12-14 years of employment, $700; 15-17 years of employment, $1,000; 18 + years of employment, $1,100. Credit Union: Outstanding benefits are available through the Credit Union.
No State Income Tax. No Social Security deductions for most positions working 20 hours per week or more. Retirement benefit offered is the State of Nevada retirement system, Public Employees Retirement System (PERS), which is one of the best in the country.

PERS ELIGIBLE POSITIONS:

Eligible Employees who select the employer paid salary schedule (Schedule A) will have Washoe County School District (WCSD) contribute 100% of the employee's retirement contributions. Eligible employees who select the employer-employee paid salary schedule (Schedule B) will have a portion of the legislatively designated amount paid by WCSD to PERS for retirement benefits and the employee, in turn, will pay the remaining portion of the legislatively designated amount of his/her salary to PERS. These options are introduced and explained in detail during the New Employee Orientation upon selection for employment.

New employees will be fingerprinted upon hire and every five years thereafter and will have $58.50 deducted from their first paycheck to help defray the cost of fingerprinting. Non-licensed employees will have $58.50 deduction when their fingerprints are completed every five years. Fingerprint fees are subject to change.
