PRN School Nurse
The acronym PRN is a phrase commonly used in the medical field that stands for "pro re neta," which translates to "as the need arises." Prn refers to the nurse who does not work on a set schedule and works only when needed. PRN nurses will primarily fill staffing needs when called upon. The hours the PRN nurse work and where they work can vary from week to week. The amount the PRN nurse works each week can vary from zero to an amount agreed upon by the district. There is no guarantee that the PRN nurse will fill a particular amount of hours, only called upon as needed and agreed upon.
MAJOR FUNCTIONS
The school nurse is a professional with specialized practice in the school setting. It is a multi-faceted role that requires the combination of professional clinical nursing practices along with a specialized component that promotes the health, well-being, academic achievement, and success of the school-aged student.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
OTHER PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
Utilizes current Mississippi School Nurse Procedures & Standards of Care Manual working as the traditional school nurse.
Current Mississippi Board of Nursing License (Registered Nurse) with no restrictions.
Principles and practices underlying professional nursing.
Participate cooperatively in the school nurse program.
MISSION AND GOALS:
The school nurse's mission is to support the policies and procedures of Madison County Schools and to possess the knowledge and skills necessary to make healthy choices that promote healthy lifestyles. The school nurse should model a lifestyle of healthy eating patterns and moderate physical activity as a valuable part of their daily lives.
Works with the Principal to articulate and promote the school system's vision of learning and teaching.
The above statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by people assigned to this classification. Employees may perform other tasks and assume other responsibilities as assigned by the supervisor, administrative staff, or superintendent.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
Employees shall maintain confidentiality and the privacy of all school records. Employees shall be consistently responsible--maintaining regular punctual attendance and timely completion of assigned duties, working assigned days and using sick/personal leave appropriately.

- Provide school health education and instruction for studentsEncourage good nutritionDefine & implement emergency care for accidentsImplement emergency care for illnessDocument student encountersPerform health assessmentsProvide health counselingAdminister medicationIdentify and manage chronic health problemsRecognize and support abused adolescentsAssess and facilitate special education needsPromote dropout prevention programsObtains a health historyPerform other duties and responsibilities as assigned
OTHER PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

- Work within the scope of practice as defined by the Mississippi Nurse Practice ActFollows Madison County Schools Board Policies
Current Mississippi Board of Nursing License (Registered Nurse) with no restrictions.
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing or Associate Degree in Nursing
- Current Certification in CPR/AED/FIRST AIDMinimum of five (5) years of experience in the nursing profession preferredPrior school nurse experience preferred
Principles and practices underlying professional nursing.
- Principles and practices underlying the special field of school healthCurrent trends in nursing and literature in the field of school healthOrganization and administration of other cooperating agenciesState and local laws relating to health and social issues
Participate cooperatively in the school nurse program.
- Exercise professional judgment in decision makingUtilize appropriate communication techniques with students and school personnelDemonstrate a genuine interest in the student population and its health needsProvide professional development and education to teachers
