AmeriCorps Math Intervention Tutor & Mentor (Remote Position) January 2023 - June 2023

Minimum-Time AmeriCorps Tutor & Mentor (300 hours)

Hours 1:00 PM-4:30 PM ET Monday-Thursday, and 8:00 AM-12:00 PM ET on Saturdays

Position Summary

As a GO AmeriCorps Fellow, you will play an integral role in the school community by providing small groups of students individualized instruction, mentorship, and enrichment opportunities each day in a minimum-time AmeriCorps service position. You will serve groups of elementary, middle or high school students Monday-Friday and some Saturdays- an average service week lasting 12 hours.

You will gain valuable professional and personal experience and acquire skills in civic engagement, teamwork and leadership during the service term. The ideal candidate for the GO AmeriCorps Fellowship is a college graduate who is team-oriented, passionate about service and who believes that all young people deserve a high-quality education.

Where We Serve

Our minimum-time Fellows serve remotely at our Great Oaks Legacy High School campus in Newark, NJ. If accepted, you will work with students virtually (via video conference) according to a schedule that averages 12 hours of service per week.

AmeriCorps Benefits

The total living allowance for this position is $6,931, to be paid in biweekly increments during the course of the service term. GO AmeriCorps Fellows also receive ongoing professional development throughout the year. Fellows will be eligible for a prorated AmeriCorps Segal Education Award upon completion of 300 service hours and ending the year in good standing.

Responsibilities

Instruct for Mastery - GO AmeriCorps Fellows deliver individualized, small-group instruction to students in the context of a supportive relationship, resulting in a significant increase in math and ELA achievement.
  • Provide daily small-group instruction (tutoring) to students in Math for an average of 10 instructional hours per week, during the approximate time windows of 1:00 PM-4:30 PM ET Monday-Thursday, and 8:00 AM-12:00 PM ET on Saturdays
  • Utilize prep time each day to organize, adapt, and/or plan instructional materials
  • Provide students with extra academic supports during after school and/or Saturday Academy over the course of the school year
  • Work with students and teachers to set individualized and student driven academic goals
  • Actively participate in student and/or content focused meetings with leadership and teachers
  • Assess student academic progress and effectively use data to inform instruction

Mentor for Leadership - GO AmeriCorps Fellows provide fundamental support to students' social emotional growth. Fellows help empower students to evolve into leaders.
  • Collaborate with staff to support individualized needs of students
  • Constantly serve as a model of professional behavior for students
  • Develop relationships with families through weekly phone calls and other communications
  • Acclimate to the Great Oaks Legacy school culture and procedures and support accountability of students

Develop a Community - GO AmeriCorps Fellows contribute to the development of the school and surrounding communities.
  • Actively participate in professional learning opportunities
  • Lead or support homework support (dependent on site placement)

Additional responsibilities may be established by school leadership in collaboration with network leadership

Qualifications
  • At least current college/university junior or senior
  • Associate's or Bachelor's degrees preferred
  • Citizenship or legal Permanent Residency status in the United States (AmeriCorps requirement)
  • Served no more than three previous AmeriCorps service terms (AmeriCorps National requirement)
  • Have consistent access to a working computer or laptop with a camera and internet

GO AmeriCorps Fellow Teacher Residency

The Teacher Residency is a pathway to teaching created for GO AmeriCorps Fellows. Each year, 10% of Fellows are selected to participate in an embedded Masters of Art in Teaching program. As a Teacher Resident, you can enroll in one of our partner graduate programs, working alongside a Mentor Teacher while gradually taking on teaching responsibility. General Information

If selected for the role, you will start in January 2023 and serve through June 2023. The minimum time GO AmeriCorps remote Fellow positions are available to qualified individuals across the United States, serving students in Newark, NJ.

COVID-19 VACCINE*

The GO Foundation requires all staff members and GO Fellows to obtain and submit evidence of full COVID-19 vaccination. This decision was made to keep all staff and students safe as we return to in-person meetings and site visits. New hires will be able to start working with one dose of the vaccine as long as the second dose (where applicable) is scheduled within a month of the person's start date.
