Summary

Responsible for providing a safe, nurturing, hygienic and educational environment for infants and toddlers. Provide direct care to infants and toddlers; plan for and implement developmentally appropriate activities; assist in maintaining a safe and hygienic environment; orient and work with student assistants, volunteers and substitutes; build relationships and maintain communication with APS students/parents.

Provide direct childcare including diapering, feeding, cleaning up, potty training and reacting to the immediate needs of the children.

Plan for and implement developmentally appropriate activities and experiences into each day.

Assist in maintaining a safe and hygienic environment including cleaning the facility, sterilizing, repairing equipment/toys, keeping food safe, laundering and performing fire drills.

Orient and work with student assistants, volunteers and substitutes and assign daily grades to student assistants.

Keep records as required by Human Services Department including attendance, feeding, napping, medications, diapering and maintaining individual folders.

Facilitate infant movement through developmental stages of cognitive, physical and social development. Input observations into assessment data system.

Identify special cognitive, physical and emotional needs of children.

Maintain communication with parents including advising, mentoring, educating and informing them of their children's progress. Write children's progress reports and conduct parent conferences

Assist infants and toddlers in establishing eating and napping schedules.

Maintain inventory of supplies including warehouse, grocery and catalog items.

Participate in fire drills, Tri-County Health visitations, Human Services visits and visits by other groups such as student nurses.

Decorate nursery according to Human Services guidelines.

EDUCATION AND TRAINING:

High school diploma or equivalent plus courses in CPR, First Aid, Standard Precautions and medication administration. Safe Sleep and Shaken Baby training must be completed before starting and updated annually. Must complete 15 hours of child development courses annually. ECE 101 and ECE 102/103 college courses with a grade of C or above or Colorado Shines Early Childhood Professional Credential 2.0 Level 2 Credential required.

EXPERIENCE:

3 years of experience in care and supervision of four or more children under 6 years of age who are not related to the individual.

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, EQUIPMENT & OTHER:

Oral and written communication, strong interpersonal and childcare skills. Ability to relate positively to children and adults. Ability to work with children and parents with diverse backgrounds and abilities. Operating knowledge of and experience with washer, dryer and microwave oven. Operating knowledge of personal computers preferred.

Infant Room Supervisor Certified

SUPERVISION/TECHNICAL RESPONSIBILITY:

May train and provide input into the evaluation of subordinate Paraeducator (1). Direct the work of, train and/or evaluate/grade volunteers (up to 3) and student assistants (up to 15). Acts as a resource for parents, teachers of parents, Nursery Director, Special Education staff and Nurse by providing feedback and input regarding the program, parents and/or children within the program.

SAFETY TO SELF AND OTHERS:

High exposure to self to repetitive motion injuries due to lifting children and to disease due to caring for sick or injured children or handling bodily fluids. Medium exposure to self to bruises and cuts due to upset children and to typical classroom accidents. Low exposure to heat burns due to working with hot water and to loss of sight due to children throwing objects. May expose children and/or students to injuries in the classroom if a person in this position fails to properly monitor their safety and/or properly oversee others in the care of the children. May also expose children to disease or further injury if a person in this position fails to properly handle or dispose of body fluids or administer proper and timely care to sick or injured children.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; talk or hear; and taste or smell. The employee is frequently required to stand and sit. The employee is occasionally required to walk and climb or balance. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to outdoor weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.

MENTAL FUNCTIONS:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to communicate, coordinate, instruct, evaluate and use interpersonal skills. The employee is frequently required to compare, analyze, copy, compute, synthesize, compile and negotiate.
