Description:

Educational Interpreting for Elementary Aged Learners
Somerset County Region
Hourly, approximately 30 hours per week, following school calendar - Non-Bargaining Unit Compensation Plan. Position location will be based on specific need.

Job Summary:
To provide deaf students with access to educational activities by interpreting spoken information.
Qualifications:
  1. Graduation from an interpreter training program, although not a requirement for EIPA, is preferred.
  2. The ability to interpret at a normal conversational rate in American Sign Language (ASL) or an English-based signing system (transliteration).
  3. Proficiency (a score of 3.5 in PA) as evaluated by the Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA). Documentation of EIPA proficiency
  4. Acceptable Act 34, Act 151, Act 114, PDE 6004, and Act 168 clearances.
  5. Must be able to interpret, analyze and problem solve.
  6. Must be able to converse and interact with individuals with diverse levels of education and abilities.
  7. Adhere to the Interpreter's Code of Ethics: Guidelines for Educational Settings.
  8. As a member of an educational team, the interpreter must be able work cooperatively with individuals whose responsibilities may overlap with those of the interpreter.

Working Conditions:
Classroom environment. Travel between assigned locations in personal vehicle is required.

IU 8 is one of the 29 intermediate units that provides a vast array of services for member school districts, including student services, training and technical assistance, online learning, and customized programs and services. IU 8 includes four counties comprised of 35 school districts (approximately 98 schools) and five Career Technical Centers. Appalachia Intermediate Unit 8 serves approximately 47,000 students across four counties within 3500 square miles. Our service area includes four counties: Blair, Somerset, Bedford, and Cambria. We have five different office locations within our service area: Altoona, Duncansville, Ebensburg, Richland, and Somerset.  IU08 has opportunities for everyone and our service area offers a broad range of living environments from rural to more densely populated city areas.
